"Holy Cow!" Do you recognize that statement? Or can you think of someone it is attributable to? True baseball fans, specifically Cubs fans would think immediately of the legendary Harry Caray. I, for one, miss Caray now more than ever - even though I never considered myself a huge fan. Why? Because as the voice of the Cubbies, Harry was a far preferable option to baseball lovers than the Cub's current radio voice, Ron Santo. Having recently purchased XM Radio, I have had occasion recently to check out radio broadcasts of the North-Siders.
My take? AAAAARRRRGGH!!! sums it up nicely.
Santo is unbearable. His nasaly "Aw, man," and his "Geez," and his "Oh no" whines have gotten on my last nerve.
Ron, I realize that you are a lifelong Cubbie and you live and die with the team. In fact, I respect that. But why must you sound like you are on the verge of tears, like a pathetic chap who just discovered his wife's infedelity, every time an opposing player hits a dinger? "Oh no, we don't deserve that."
Why must you sound like a homeless man coveting a crust of bread, when begging the baseball gods for a walk-off homerun that even you must know will never be granted? "Come on, now. Please. We need this one." Quite frankly, it's pathetic.
You want to be a baseball man? A color analyst? Then grow up, stop the incessant whining, and show some professionalism, maybe even a little enthusiasm. Like what you do. If you don't enjoy the game, how the hell can anyone else?
