Pirates starter Zach Duke(1-1) was coming off of one of the worst starts of the season against the Giants to face the Brewers and Jeff Suppan(1-2). The Brewers had taken Game One of the two-game series.
Like the night before, the Brewers bats started hot right out of the gates. Rickie Weeks opened with a single, followed up by a J.J. Hardy home run to the leftfield corner. The Brewers scoring didn't stop there. After Prince Fielder grounded out to the pitcher, Bill Halland Kevin Mench singled. Corey Hart drove Hall in with a double and Damian Miller hit a sac fly to give the Brewers four runs in the first inning.
Humberto Cota hit a sacrifice fly in the second inning to cut the lead to 4-1.
Milwaukee struck again in the bottom of the fourth. Tony Graffanino and Suppan each singled before Weeks singled in one run and Hardy doubled in the other two. Milwaukee was out to an early 7-1 lead.
After Duke left the game, the Pirates bullpen quieted the Brewers bats. Xavier Nady hit a two-run homer in the sixth to pull the Pirates within four.
In the eighth, the Pirates started to rally against Derrick Turnbow. LaRoche and Bay drew back-to-back walks, then moved into scoring position on a wild pitch. Nady and Jose Bautista hit singles to drive in a run apiece.
The Pirates went into the ninth down 7-5. Milwaukee closer Francisco Cordero was able to strike out the Pirates in order to end the game.
Game Notes:
- It was Zach Duke's 24th birthday.
- Xavier Nady was 3-4 with 3 RBI.
