The Pirates and Dodgers sent two hot starters to the mound, Ian Snell(1-1) and Brad Penny(3-0), respectively. Between the two, they have started six games and allowed only six runs.

Chris Duffy started the game off for the Pirates with a single. After Penny threw a wild pitch, Duffy ran to second. Thinking the catcher, Russell Martin, would not throw to second, Duffy walked into the base instead of sliding. Martin did throw however. Duffy's body screened Jeff Kent and the ball went into centerfield. Seeing this, Duffy made it to third base on the error. Jack Wilson proceeded to ground out, but it was enough to score the runner.

Snell got the first two batters out in the first, but Nomar Garciaparra doubled to right on a short flyball that bounces out of the sliding Xavier Nady's glove. Jeff Kent singled him home to tie the game at one run apiece.

Penny had control problems in the third. The inning started with Penny issuing a walk to Snell. After two outs and a Jack Wilson single, he walked Jason Bay to load the bases. With nowhere to put Adam LaRoche, Penny walked in a run. Grady Little came out to the mound to talk to Penny. When the home plate umpire Joe West came to break-up the conversation, Little gave him a few choice words and was ejected from the game. With the bases still loaded, Penny bounced a ball in the dirt and away from the catcher. Wilson raced in to score on the wild pitch. The Pirates had an early 3-1 lead.

In the bottom of the sixth, Ethier hit a sacrifice fly to make it a one-run game.

Salomon Torres came in to close the 3-2 game in the ninth. It started with a leadoff walk to Ethier. Wilson Valdez reached on a fielder's choice. During the next at bat, Torres threw a wild pitch, moving Valdez to second. Ronny Paulino's throw to second was high, sailing into centerfield, and Valdez moved to third with one out. The 2-2 pitch in the next at bat goes under Paulino's glove and heads to the backstop. Valdez comes in to score. The Dodgers tied the game at 3 without getting a single hit in the inning.

Russell Martin crushed a no-doubt-about-it walk-off Grand Slam in the bottom of the tenth to give the Dodgers a come-from-behind victory.

Game Notes:

  • Jack Wilson was 3-5.
  • Matt Capps recorded his sixth Hold.
  • Torres' Blown Save was his second of the year.
