The undefeated Pittsburgh Pirates began a three-game series in Cincinnati on Friday. LHP Paul Maholm(0-0) took the mound for the Buccos against the Reds' Matt Belisle(0-0).
Pittsburgh took an early lead in the first. After Chris Duffy and Jack Wilson started off the game with singles, catcher Ronny Paulino singled with two outs and men on the corners to plate Duffy.
The Reds struck back in the bottom of the first. With one out, 2B Brandon Phillips drove a Maholm breaking ball that got too much of the plate to right center for a home run.
After a leadoff double by Jose Bautista in the top of the second, Belisle sat down 14 straight Pirates.
On the Reds side, they broke the game open in the third. After Maholm retired the first two batters, Adam Dunn and Phillips, Edwin Encarnacion and Ken Griffey Jr. hit back to back singles. Jeff Conine pulled a 1-0 pitch over the leftfield wall to put the Reds up 4-1. Maholm allowed a single to the next batter before retiring the next seven Reds.
In the bottom of the seventh, the Reds stretched their lead. Ryan Freel ledoff the inning with a double. Then, he stole third and came home to score on the same play due to a wild throw by Paulino.
The Reds tagged on one more run in the eighth off of Damaso Marte with a sac fly by Dave Ross.
Notes:
Belisle pitched six innings, struck out six, and walked one.
Todd Coffey pitched a scoreless inning for the Reds.
Griffey made his second error of the year on a bobble during the Pirates only scoring play of the day.
Adam LaRoche went 0-3, striking out twice to lower his average to .067.
Chris Duffy is hitting .222 in the leadoff spot and made his first error of the year.
