Pittsburgh Harlequins RFC
[edit] A Simple Begining
The Pittsburgh Harlequins Rugby Club was founded in 1973 by a group of law students at the University of Pittsburgh. Approaching our 30th anniversary the organization boasts an active roster of 40 players and an alumni roster of more than 300. The Harlequins are members of the USA Rugby Football Union, the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union and the Potomac Rugby Union. We are the only Division I side in the Pittsburgh area and in 1999 we reached the Final 16 of the National Championships.
[edit] Founding the Pittsburgh RFA
In 1995 members of the Harlequins Rugby Football Club (RFC) formed the Pittsburgh Harlequins Rugby Football Association (RFA). The purpose of the RFA was to create and maintain a world-class rugby facility and to promote rugby in the Greater Pittsburgh Region by developing youth programs at the community and high school levels. These programs stress athletic development, mentoring, respect and camaraderie. We have had great success thus far, maintaining three high school and five inner-city community programs in the Pittsburgh Region. All coaches in these programs are USA Rugby certified and volunteers from the active and alumni Harlequins rosters. Our world-class training facility has been completed and is in full operation. It includes two official size rugby fields, extensive parking, state-of-the-art lighting, and an incredible clubhouse that is unrivaled in the United States.
