Pitt Gets Pretty Well Crushed

Earlier in the week, one Armchair writer predicted that the University of Pittsburgh would be 10-0 going into their matchup with the "vastly overrated" West Virginia University. The way that I feel about WV notwithstanding, Pitt took a huge blow to their perfect record today by losing to Michigan State University. At 2-1 on the season, it will be a real uphill battle to achieve that 10-0 record by November 16.
As one of my greatest influences, Brian Collins might say, Pitt started off good, but then eventually...Pitt shot down, and ended up doing poorly. The Panthers jumped out to a 10-0 first quarter lead, but went into halftime tied 10-10 with the Spartans of Michigan State. It was all Spartans after that, scoring 14 in the third quarter to take a commanding lead that they did not relinquish. At one point, they were up 31-10.
Pittsburgh scored 13 in the fourth quarter to make the score look respectable, but they got pretty well crushed.
Pitt's Tyler Palko had a game-high 274 yards passing, but got no help from the rushing attack. MSU outgained Pitt 334 to 80 on the ground. The Spartans really took advantage of the Pitt defense, averaging 7.2 yards per play, compared to 5.3 for Pitt. They really owe the game to quarterback Drew Stanton, who threw for 191 yards and rushed for another 104 (averaging 8.0 yards per carry).
With the win, Michigan State improved to 3-0. They face another test next week as they take on the University of Notre Dame, which is getting spanked by the University of Michigan, 27-7, late in the second quarter.
