Pitcher's Grade Point

Pitcher's Grade Point is a metric for comparing pitching outings, developed by ESPN.com's David Srinivasan and based on the Game Score system developed by Bill James.

It is designed to give more credit to strikeout pitchers and less credit to pitchers who give up a lot of extra-base hits, in a change from James' formula which weighted all hits the same.

The formula is as follows:

PGP = (IP * 10) + K's - Walks - Total Bases - 2*runs - 2*earned runs.

By this metric, here are several example game scores from the first month or so of the 2007 season:

Pitcher Date IP H 2B 3B HR RA ER BB Ks PGP
Mark Buehrle (CHW) 4/18 9 0 0 0 0 0 0 1 8 97
Felix Hernandez (SEA) 4/11 9 1 0 0 0 0 0 2 6 93
Cole Hamels (PHI) 4/21 9 5 1 0 1 1 1 2 15 91
