Pippen To Make a Return?

15
Vote

by user BigPPup

Former NBA All-Star Scottie Pippen who made a name for himself while playing for the Chicago Bulls, told reporters this week, that he is seriously considering a comeback to the NBA at age 41.

Pippen retired in 2004 after knee injuries, however now three years later he feels that the knee is good enough to give it another go as long as it is with a contending team. Scottie thinks his previous playoff experience in Chicago, Portland and Houston would be of value to a team who is looking for that extra nudge to get over the playoff hunt. He also went as far to say he was willing to sign a 10 day contract to prove that he is still able to play and earn a roster spot on a NBA team.

NBA teams will get their first look at Pippen this weekend when he participates in the NBA Shooting-Stars competition with Ben Gordon of the Chicago Bulls.

At 41 Scottie would not be the oldest player to come back and play in the NBA, but with the three year layoff it is difficult to say exactly what type of playing shape he may really be in. Scottie can also be a bit of a head case and a difficult teammate to have. So bringing him in for leadership and lifting locker room moral could be a risk.

I remember Scottie Pippen from NBA 98! If I was looking for a talented player to buy (presuming you still can this late in the season), Pippen wouldn't be who I'd look for.

You can sign free agents to your roster till sometime in April. Pippen can provide some leadership, but I agree, Id be lery of picking up anyone over the age of 40 and who has been out of the game as long as he has.

Its an opinion, so it doesnt require backing up. But without Jordan, Pippen is nothing. And, yes, I saw him play enough to know. Jordan gets his rings without Pippen, Pippen has nothing without Michael.

I disagree about Pippen sucking and being by far the most overrated player in NBA history. That's just crazy talk. I agree that Pip probably doesn't win a ring without Mike... although if not for a ridiculous collapse in Game 7 of the 2000 Western Finals, he may have won a title with the Blazers. But I think you severely underestimate Pippen's importance to those Bulls teams, especially on defense. If Pippen isn't around, I don't think MJ and the Bulls win any rings in the nineties. Seriously.

Pippen was a good role player, he played the role of staying out of Michael's way. Pippen wasn't good enough to be the main man on a team, he was however a great second man, like Michael Richards to Jerry Seinfeld. He is recognized as a great player because he was fortunate enough to be on a great team and played alongside a great player and has a bucketful of rings.

When he was the main man in 1993-94, he made 1st Team All-NBA, 1st Team All-Defense, was the MVP of the All-Star Game, scored 22 PPG on 49.1% shooting from the floor, plus averaged 8.7 rebounds, plus averaged 5.6 assists, plus averaged 2.9 steals, and led the Bulls to 55 wins (just 2 fewer than the Michael-led team the year before), came within one game of beating the Knicks and going to the East Finals, and maintained his regular-season production into the playoffs despite facing New York, one of the greatest defensive teams of all time. Say it with me: Pippen was a great player. Just because he played with MJ doesn't mean we should ignore how good he was.

As great as MJ was, he could not have won all these rings without Scottie Pippen and his supporting staff of players such as Paxson, Armstrong, Grant, Paxson and later on Kerr and Kukoc I totally disagree with the assertion that he's overrated. In fact, I think Pippen is one of the more underrated greats in NBA history. In the two years that Jordan left to play baseball, Pippen stepped up in his new-found leadership role and played the best ball of his career!! You should read Phil Jackson's book "The Last Season". In it, Phil Jackson emphasized that Pippen was the captain on the defensive end throughout their title era. Defense wins championships and it was the key defensive stops down the stretch of those Finals games along with the execution on offense by MJ that led to their greatness. He was one of the best two-way players all time. Good scorer and an even better defender as well as rebounder. He delivered all the intangibles. You can't just go by the score sheet, Kelsdad.

Not really a fair comparison, two point guards to a small forward. But, that said, the PPG difference is a point and a half, Kidd's RPG is actually higher, and don't forget the five per game in assists. And Stockton? Same thing, without Malone he's nothing.

As for your Stockton heresy, I have a question: Do you like Steve Nash? Would you like a better-passing version of Nash who was a much tougher defender? If you answered "yes" to either of these questions, you too might be a John Stockton fan!

First of all, Kelsdad, spend your weekend working on learning how to click the reply button. You can do it, I promise.

Second, Michael would not have won all those rings without Pip, but he also would have won them without Horace Grant, John Paxson, Steve Kerr and a lot of other guys. Pippen's not in the Top 50 of all time, but I'd put him in the Top 100. The Bulls still did well during Michael's first retirement under the leadership of Pip. Although, he did always have an ego that outweighed his talent. For instance this recent quote, "I'm not going to be a nonstop high-flyer like I was in my prime."

That being said, I think it's unfair that a player like Pippen can just pick a team with two months to go and get a free pass for the playoffs. I also think it would be a bad idea for a team to pick him up. The reason for both of these is a team takes a huge chunk of the season working extremely hard to play together as a team. Pippen would get to skip all that work and a lot of that work would be undone by adding another player, especially one with as big of name and ego as Pip. When I saw this story break I started thinking about how he could relieve some pressure off LeBron, but when I saw the two month's left comment, I hope he stay's far away from Cleveland because he's going to mess up whatever team he joins.

My guess is that if he comes back, it will be for the Lakers under Phil Jackson since they're looking for someone to help run the point and Pip knows the Tex Winters system.

"Point forward is an unofficial playing position....." Truthfully? I'm not a big Nash fan, and I live in Phoenix. I think a true point guard is an Earl Monroe or Bob Cousy, even Stockton. It should be a pass first position, lately it has gotten away from that. I don't believe Nash was MVP last season, and the Suns would have won it all if Kidd was here.

With all that said, I'm not going to go and sign a player that hasn't played in three years and is over the age of 40. The game is much faster and quicker. What's going to happen the first time he plays back to back games. Hopefully he won't catch Nash and the Suns on the second half of that back to back!!

Aside from the whole "Do you want him or not?" argument, is there anybody else who feels that once you say you're retired, you're retired; no comebacks (or takebacks for you Good Will Hunting fans), and no "un-retirements."

I'd be in favor for a requirement that a player have been on the roster for XX% of the team's games, not on the roster by XX date.

I'm a Chicago guy, so I'm a big Scottie fan, but not a fan of this situation. It just doesn't seem to pass the "Smell Test."

As are as unretirments, I think there should be a period where you have to be out for so long, say three years, before you can come back. When you retire you leave a hole on a roster, you get a contract buyout or whatever, it's a big loss for the team to deal with. Players and coaches that retire one month and unretire the next to another team is cheap and should not be permitted. I like your idea for a player having to be on the roster for a percentage of the games, the only thing is if a team, lets say NBA team, would lose 4 guys to injury too late in the season, they'd be stuck with whatever 7 guys they have left to play 5 positions.
