Philly Fans nearing all-time low...

Philly nearing All-Time Sucking Low

I'm from the Philadelphia area but have lived in Phoenix for the last 6 years. Since I moved here

  • Philly was passed by Phoenix in Population and
  • Left in the Dust by Boston in the 'sad-sack fans' categories.

I could care less about the D-Backs vs Phillies game tonight, 1983 looms large...

The Town without a Quality Curse

What is it? The Curse of Joe Morgan? He leaves after the '83 season... all hell breaks loose? I remember 1983 in Philadelphia. I chanted "Beat L.A." in the 700 section of the Vet.

The Flyers were in the midst of a long stretch of being a respectable franchise. The Sixers were getting old, but soon had Sir Charles (giveaway A.I. in a trade to Phoenix a la Barkley and Coach D'Antoni'll get him to the finals too...).

The Eagles sucked, but had the Vet as an intimidating/scary home field advantage. Leonard Tose had dough to spend on a good football team and good business sense.

The Phillies had some pretty great vets (Schmidt, Carlton, Rose) and some good young talent (Von Hayes, Juan Samuel, Jeff Stone and Steve Jeltz) Who knew it would last so long, and could well last into the '20's or 30's (doesn't seem like it's impossible, does it?)

At least you're not the Cubs...then again they have 2 Championships, Phillies have 1...Long Live Don Carmen and Bruce Ruffin!

And THAT's NOT EVEN WHAT THIS ARTICLE IS ABOUT

Philly fans...I hang my head in semi-shame.

Sal Fasano was traded! How many suicides took place in South Philly tonight? Is Christof still ok?

I watched a whole freeking Yankees game because I thought I saw Sal Fasano. I did, I did! He went 1-3 and only had one passed ball, then was taken out so Jorge Posada could awake from his nap to catch Dr Sandman in the 9th. Good job Sal, have a beer, a slice of pizza or two and grab some T&A in Dallas tonight. Beautiful talent that Dallas, pretty town too.

Bold Prediction #452- T.O. will be wearing cowboy boots and a 12 gallon Stetson during a TD celebration.

That's Right! I had to invoke the name of Terrell Eldorad Owens to punish you for not... wait, let me check...holy crap, NO Sal Fasano story on ArmchairGM... it MUST be deadest sports time of year ever, or the media has totally flooded us with fluff. (Occulm's razor would lead me to believe I scared everyone away)

I gave you plenty of time to break the "Sal Fasano was dealt to Yanks, let's all kill ourselves" headline. I can understand why Yankees fans haven't written anything. A-Rod's pretty good again, YOU ARE IDIOTS FOR NOT LOVING THIS GUY PLAYING FOR YOUR TEAM! I digress...

Is it SUCH a sad state of sport in Philadelphia? Dan Patrick has nothing but Philly fans on the ledge calling him. Is football so important now that you've out Buffaloed the early 90's Bills?

Sal Fasano looked HILArious with the shave! Like a cross between the guy from Spinal Tap and John Oates.

Oh yeah, By the way...Fasano was traded for middle infielder, hero to his hometown and probable future steroid suspendee Hector Made (he just sounds like a guy waiting to get nabbed)

Keep your heads up, Philly fans

You are seeing a golden era - this isn't 1983 anymore.

Phils are young and stocked with underproductive talent. Kinda like the '92 Phillies who were dead last, but were 2nd in runs, went to the series the next year when everything came together. The start of a dynasty there just needs a trigger. A trade, a freak incident... something Philly, nah-mean? Be nice to your talent, the days of J.D. Drew and Scott Rolen are irrelevant now. Be proud the uniforms aren't butt-freeking fugly. Long Live Marty Bystrom!

The Flyers are gonna figure it out. Still a top flight org-an-i-za-tion

The Sixers... well, I don't know what to tell you other than PLEASE enjoy A.I. He is a once every other generation kind of talent - mad heart

The Eagles... Yeah it sucks the Steelers did that to you. Donnie will be fine. Trust your coach. STAY HEALTHY and you have a great opportunity to make EVRYTHING better. Just like the fact that Rich Kotite isn't anywhere around. Long Live Bubby Brister!

1983 - The Curse of Jim O'Brien

For those of you old enough to start forgetting stuff, Jim O'Brien was an extremely popular Channel 6 weatherman who died while parachuting.... 3 months after the Sixers won their title. The last title in Philly sports. Hmmm. I claim the rights if no one else has figured it out yet...

  • his daughter played "Roz Doyle" on Frasier!

Philly's True low spot was either 1987 to 1989, or the day Jerome Brown died.

______

'By the Way' is a cliche; The trade deadline is nudging closer...

  • the deals will come soon!
  • STILL NO "Sal Fasano Traded For A Maid" headline OR "Yankees kick the Poop out of the Rangers" by YankWankers OR "I'm gonna puke blue stars, I loathe these lose-in-UGLY-fashion Rangers " by ASwaff
  • It says I'm logged in...

  • side notes from the news tonight
    • I saw a replay of a Syracuse v. Virginia Tech football game on ESPN Classic from 1998 when Donovan McNabb led his team to a fourth quarter comeback despite the fact that they blew their last timeout because, get this... D McNibby was blowing chunks IN THE HUDDLE. The Syracuse announcer says "yeah, he does that sometimes late in games" LIKE IT WAS NO BIG DEAL! Then they get to the inch line, Donnie gets sacked twice and loses like 35 yards. 4th down, ole' #5 rolls right throws a lofty pass left in the end zone. Prayer play, Syracuse wins! No big deal that dude blew chunks. I don't remember hearing anything about that when he was drafted... they kept it REAL hush-hush like.
    • Albert Joey Belle, aka "walking HoF Cutoff Line" looked fat, old, greybearded, dishevelled and psychotic in the news tonight about his stalking charges. He stuck a GPS device on his Ex's car AND got caught. eek eek eek (psycho) They DO have a Hall of Fame for players like that...

This would hav ebeen much better if it wasn't an explosion of information. What you noticed about McNabb is worthy of it's own article... it'd generate more discussion that way.

(Begin Office Space Voice) Yeah, if you could at least organize it a little better so it doesn't make my brain hurt as much, that would be great. Thanks.

what happened here? It was like two, maybe three, articles were in a train crash or something. Still, I wouldn't want to be a Philly sports fan - at least Cleveland has a couple budding superstars.

It's not like I ever respected Philly or their fans...but whatever respect I did have for them flew right out the window about a month ago at Fenway when the Sox were playing the Phillies. I have never seen a less intelligent fanbase in all my life, and I know a lot of Yankee fans. They spent the entire game chanting about the Eagles. When the Phillies made a good play, they chanted about the Eagles. When the Sox made a good play, they chanted about the Eagles. And it wasn't just one group of fans. It was three or four groups in different parts of the stadium that were trying to get Eagles chants going. It's bad enough they apparently didn't know what sport they were watching, but even at an Eagles game, theres' no reason to chant for the Eagles. And to come into New England, where the Eagles got embarrassed a couple of years ago and start acting like the Eagles mean anything? Definately the dumbest display by a fanbase that I've ever seen.

Give me a break. I've heard Yankees suck chants at Pats games, U2 concerts, even the Pats superbowl parade Yankees suck chants could be heard... Almost any gathering of Bostonians. This sounds like the pot calling the kettle black to me.

jamie strange- it is hard as hell to be a philly fan. i've learned that you just can't expect anything out of them, just when they get you up they turn around and kick you right in the balls, you just take the good wit the bad. Howard was great for the phills this year, but this eagles team is killing me, i swear if i have to look at donovan smiling after one more screw up i'm going to spaz. whats crazy is all the shit the do on the field carrys over to my games of madden?
