Zara Phillips won the BBC Sports Personality of the Year Award at the NEC, in Birmingham, England last night.
The public vote went for Phillips, who beat off competition from Darren Clarke, a Ryder Cup winning golfer that overcame personal problems with the death of his wife, and Beth Tweddle, Britain's first ever Gymnastics World Champion.
Phillips is the reigning three day eventing World and European Champion, and follows her Mother, Princess Anne, who won the Award in 1971 - making them the first mother-daughter combination to win the award.
Phillips is a member of the British Royal Family, and her grandmother is the Queen Elizabeth II of England (and the Commonwealth, etc., but I won't go into that). The Queen was indeed present for all her triumphs.
There were many other awards - the European Ryder Cup Team won an award, St Helens Rugby League Club won the Team of the Year after winning all three trophies available in Rugby League. Paul Hunter became the first person to post-humously win an award, winning the Helen Rollason Award. Bjorn Borg won the Lifetime Achievement Award.
Plug - Armchair readers have a chance to vote in a similar series of awards (based on the theme). The link can be found here -> 2006 ArmchairGM Sports Awards, for which the voting will remain open until Christmas. There are a lot of categories, so get voting!
