Phillies President admits mistake was made

12
Vote

Philadelphia Phillies team president Dave Montgomery has apparently decided that letting Brett Myers pitch less than twenty-four hours after Myers was arrested on assault charges wasn't such a hot idea after all.
In an interview with the Philadelphia Inquirer, Montgomery told the paper that letting Myers pitch was wrong because "...an unintended message was sent that we are somehow indifferent to the matter of spousal abuse."
Myers pled not guilty at his arraignment in Boston Municipal Court on June 23, and is taking a leave of absence from the team through the All-Star break. He was placed on the temporary inactive list on Wednesday and optioned to Single-A Clearwater.

These guys only start to "get it" when the fans react.

As for the Myers 'hasn't been convicted of anything', his wife's bruises, the public statements of eyewitnesses (published), police report, and 911 call suggest that there's more than just smoke here. "According to a police report obtained by The Inquirer, officers responded shortly after midnight to "multiple 911 calls" that "a man was beating a woman" at Boylston and Dalton Streets near the team hotel".

Yes, we should hope that the Myers family can resolve the situation. But we needn't be apologists for egregious behavior by public figures or private ones...

Did you just trust the inquirer for news?! Secondly, this means that the phils probably stayed at the sheraton...and if you've ever been there you'd know its not exactly the brightest place...not to mention alcohol... I'm not an apologist, but, as i've said before, I believe in due process. and, like i've said before, if he's found guilty he should be punished. I would expect brett to be treated no better or worse because of his semi-public standing...not to mention, when he gets back to philly, they will probably boo him and he may get run out of town...

I'm glad you're happy to set the same low standards for everyone. Me, I think people in public life should be held to a higher standard, but I guess that's a minority position these days.

Two dozen witnesses, numerous recorded 911 calls, a formal charge by the Suffolk County District Attorney, the arresting officers' report that they responded to a 911 call and found Myers' wife crying and with a swollen face...

And your response it "Did you just trust the inquirer for news?," the Sheraton is "not exactly the brightest place" and "not to mention alcohol..."

I think any far-minded person would conclude you are an apologist.

I believe in due process as well. I also believe in critical thinking.

In all candor, I don't know you at all and have no doubt you're a good guy who is sincere about this but I think you need to take a hard look at your rationale.

I believe you are totally off the mark on this one.

Happy holiday.  :)

I can tell you precisely what would happen (and the sequence) if I had done the same thing. 1) I would be put on emergency suspension (loss of privileges) by the administration of the hospital where I work. 2) The Executive Committe of the Medical Staff would hold emergency session under Medical Staff Bylaws to make recommendations. The suspension would not necessarily be lifted. 3) I would be referred (likely under suspension) to the Impaired Physician section (committee) of the Massachusetts Medical Society. After their confidential evaluation and possibly treatment I might have the chance to be reinstated. 4) I would be have my license revoked (at least temporarily) by the Board of Registration in Medicine. Then the due process would start. Of course, physicians are viewed in the context of public safety, while professional athletes are entertainers, who effectively have more rights than I would. This is a real world view of what happens.

Excellent point. If I were in the same situation, even before it hit the paper my boss would be calling me asking for a resignation, and it would be difficult for me to work in the industry again. Of course, I work in politics, and anything I do reflects on my boss, who's running for re-election this year. So again, I would be more effectively penalized than an MLB pitcher who is looked up to by kids as a role model. How much sense does that make?

The Phillies during the Bill Giles / Dave Montgomery era have been to the playoffs twice...in 1983 and 1993. The Brent Myers fiasco is just the latest debacle under this ownership. There comes a point where the mistakes just makes a person numb to additional ones. This point for the Phils has passed...several years ago.
