Phillies Lose Lieber: Where is Brett Myers When They Need Him?

Jon Lieber is the last of three Phillies starters to go on the disabled list and will be undergoing season ending surgery. With Brett Myers who had been closing games for the Phillies since Tom Gordon went down was already on the disabled list and Freddy Garcia also on the disabled list it leaves Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer, Adam Eaton, Kyle Kendrick and probably J.D. Durbin as starters unless they call up J.A. Happ to start.
Hamels with nine wins and Eaton and Moyer with seven wins each are the best of the remaining starters but Kendrick is pitching well with a 3-0 record. Whoever is selected as fifth starter may have a lot to say about how well the Phillies play the rest of the season.
The hitters are for the most part hitting well with the exception of Pat Burrell who has seven Phillies with more hits than him and six Phillies have more runs batted in than Burrell. We won't go into the sordid details of his .203 batting average since he is hitting 32 points lower than a pitcher Garcia who was hitting .235 before going on disabled list and he better not look behind him because Eaton is gaining on him and is only nine points behind Burrell.
If worst comes to worst the Phillies may have to deal a player like Greg Dobbs in order to get a decent starter to fill the gap while Lieber is out for the rest of the season. How the Phillies handle this adversity will be interesting to watch for the remainder of the 2007 season.
