Phillies Lose Lieber: Where is Brett Myers When They Need Him?

Jon Lieber is the last of three Phillies starters to go on the disabled list and will be undergoing season ending surgery. With Brett Myers who had been closing games for the Phillies since Tom Gordon went down was already on the disabled list and Freddy Garcia also on the disabled list it leaves Cole Hamels, Jamie Moyer, Adam Eaton, Kyle Kendrick and probably J.D. Durbin as starters unless they call up J.A. Happ to start.

Hamels with nine wins and Eaton and Moyer with seven wins each are the best of the remaining starters but Kendrick is pitching well with a 3-0 record. Whoever is selected as fifth starter may have a lot to say about how well the Phillies play the rest of the season.

The hitters are for the most part hitting well with the exception of Pat Burrell who has seven Phillies with more hits than him and six Phillies have more runs batted in than Burrell. We won't go into the sordid details of his .203 batting average since he is hitting 32 points lower than a pitcher Garcia who was hitting .235 before going on disabled list and he better not look behind him because Eaton is gaining on him and is only nine points behind Burrell.

If worst comes to worst the Phillies may have to deal a player like Greg Dobbs in order to get a decent starter to fill the gap while Lieber is out for the rest of the season. How the Phillies handle this adversity will be interesting to watch for the remainder of the 2007 season.

Myers has quite a fee set backs in rehab. Comcast Sportsnet always show footage of Myers throwing long toss. He is always holding his shoulder and talking with the pitching coach and trainer. It doesn't look good.

If the starters can last longer the rest of the season maybe the bullpen won't let other teams back into games so oftne.

Look at the starting rotation. Moyer is 44. Hamels is pushing the most innings he ever pitched in a single season. Eaton is a inning eater at least. The last two spots. Really, those pitchers last names should be Hope & Pray, because that is pretty much all that we can do.

This staff as of today is in about the same place Bunning and Short were at the end of 1964 season. Had to root for the Phillies that year since I saw my first major league game in Connie Mack Stadium. Don't know if Gene Mauch ever got over it.

The last week or so of the season in '64, Chris Short started three times on two days rest and Bunning twice. The wheels had fallen off at this time and Mauch was trying to right the ship. Not his fault.

But isn't true Mauch never let off one of his infamous tirades on the club during the slide to infamy back in 64? IF I have read correctly, some players on that club think that had Mauch lit into to them, they would have responded.

Oh, that's weak. The Phils had a 6 1/2 game lead with 12 games to go and blew it. They lost one game 1-0 on a steal of home. They lost another when Johnny Callison, who had only two errors all season, made two on one play. They lost another when Bunning allowed one hit, struck out 13, and lost because a relief pitcher threw a wild pitch and the guy scored from second. They were just unlucky is all, nothing more or less. All teams have bad streaks during a 162 game season, the Phillies had theirs the last week and because of what was at stake is magnified 100 times. Shit happens.

Like last night...the Phillies had the game won and the umpire blows a call making the game last four more innings till the Astros won on a walkoff homer.

Eh, even I'm floating back to earth with this team...something needs to happen for them to have a shot...Hamels, Moyer, Eaton, Kendrick (and that;s pushing it) and then what? Although, what i saw when Reyes got called out at 2nd in the phillies series and had a tantrum...i lost a lot of respect for him...whether the call was right on wrong, you don't continue to remain angry, pissed and carry on into the next half inning...

I too think this is the Phillies year even though I like the Braves. I am getting tired of the Braves getting to the playoffs then make their annual fade so just as well see the Phillies get a shot at the NL East title. Phillies are going to win this year in spite of the bad umpiring. The ball was clearly in Howard's glove before Lee touched the bag.

Just checked the Phillies schedule on ESPN.com and it shows Hamels pitching today then Kendrick, Moyer and Eaton again so guess they will go with four starters till after the All Star break and then might add a fifth starter.
