Phillies In The Outfield

In the wake of Aaron Rowand's signing with the San Francisco Giants and the trade of Michael Bourn to the Houston Astros in the Brad Lidge deal, the Phillies have suddenly found themselves a little short in the outfield. The Phillies have Pat Burrell under contract, who actually was productive last season for a change. They also have the defensive, speedster Shane Victorino, as well as capable Jayson Werth. However, the Phillies would like some depth and a bit more pop from this crew so they are apparently proceeding on two fronts. Reports indicate that they have made a contract offer to former Milwaukee Brewer Geoff Jenkins. Jenkins has had better seasons, but he's good for a few home runs, he hit 21 last year in 420 at bats. The Phillies also are interested in Mike Cameron, who is now out of the picture in San Diego with the trade for Jim Edmonds. Cameron can still pick it in centerfield and hit 21 home runs with 78 RBIs but only hit .242 last season. Cameron is also set to sit out the first 25 games next season after testing positive for an illegal substance. Either player can serve a role on the Phillies. Obviously the middle of the lineup with Jimmy Rollins, Chase Utley, and Ryan Howard is set. The Phillies can use some productive bats at the bottom of the order and that's where Cameron or Jenkins can serve a valuable role smacking a home run from the bottom of the order. Plus, Cameron would give them Rowand-like defense in the outfield. One has to wonder though how the loss of Rowand will affect this team. Rowand brought lots of intangibles to the game and he will truly be missed. It may have been worth the money to re-sign him.

However, the Phillies continue to claim that they will spend money to improve their pitching staff. So far, not much has been accomplished on this front other than the acquisition of Brad Lidge and the re-signing of J.C. Romero. The Phillies may has some interest in former Texas Rangers closer Akinori Otsuka, who was just non-tendered by the Rangers. Otsuka only threw 32 innings last season but he had 48 saves in 2006 and could be a good addition to the bullpen which is short of arms aside from Lidge, Flash Gordon, and Romero.

On another positive note for the Phillies, not one active member of the Phillies was named in the Mitchell Report. Either they are doing things the right way in Philadelphia or they simply know how not to get caught.

They've also added Chris Snelling...

I believe that they're mostly interested in Jenkins for a few reasons...

1) They don't feel super-comfortable w/ Werth in Right...

2) Jenkins is a lefty

3) Jenkins will fit in as a Burrell fill in (for his many days off...or just plain sucking) as well as a left hander for left handed pitching...

4) They need another power bat (for as much as Jenkins can provide)

Cameron can also be had, on the cheap, due to his suspension...

My question is, Where do they get leadership. Utley is a quiet guy (who's birthday is tomorrow!) and Howard still doesn't strike me as the leader of a team. Rollins has done it, but Rowand was a gritty tough guy, who i've got a soft spot for...

I'd love to see them add Otsuka...a potential Romero-Gordon-Otsuka-Lidge Combo makes a pen look pretty tough, in my estimation

We need to get ahold of Stats Bot, at least when someone want to make a point and refer to a player page as reference, have his freakin' stats updated!!

Sure, Justin, if you call 10 homers in 324 at bats working out well. In a bandbox like Citizen's Bank, nonetheless.

The fact the Phils are seriously considering signing a 39 year old outfielder to play regularly three seasons after he should have retired is a very telling stat. I have to question the Phils trading Bourn, who it should be pointed out, isn't that great himself.

Maybe the Phils realize in order to win the division they have to have the best pitching, top to bottom. They have question marks offense and defensively they suck.

i think the point I was going for was that Snelling is expected to be the 5th guy...they still plan to add a 3rd or 4th outfielder...

I, personally, don't like Jenkins, I think he's a big waste of cash. That being said, I'm not opposed to a 1 year deal, given that Burrell comes off the books next year, but I also don't know what the outfield market looks like next year...

Of course, if this allows the phils to add a #2/#3 pitcher, I think I can understand...

And Burrell will have to be relatively solid for an entire year...no given there...

Well the Phils keep saying they want to spend money on pitching, but I think they are ok in that department. They should've kept Rowand. They have Hamels, Myers and Kendrick, Moyer and who cares as the 5th starter. Plus the market for starters is so thin. And bullpen is a problem for every team.

And Jenkins name came up in every conversation I've had about guys using 'roids. Just because he wasn't on the Mitchell report doesn't mean anything, there's like a thousand guys who weren't named.

One big concern with the thin outfield going into next season is the lack of a defensive replacement for Burrell. Burrell, despite contributing a lot offensively last year, is a huge liability in left field. Taking him out with a lead was a huge advantage that looks like it won't be there this year.

Burrell has always been a big part of the Phillies ever since we got him, and the only reason people say he doesnt contribute enough is because he didnt turn out to be a huge superstar as everyone said he would be.

Some first overall draft pick he was, huh JuT. He wasn't THAT bad in 2005, but that's the past. Let's think about now... remember... positive things. Umm... he strikes out less than when he was in his early 20s. That's a good sign.

I'm pretty sure that the Phillies could station Bonds' massage chair out in left field.

Yea, um... Cameron is a good defensive center fielder... Rowand struggled just to get to some simple fly balls... thats why they want to move Victorino to center... all those running, diving catches Rowand would make difficult would be done easier because the Flying Hawaiian would be camped underneath those same balls...

I've watched a lot of baseball in my day, and that catch Rowand made against the Mets smashing and breaking his nose into the fence is one of the best catches I've ever seen. I'm sure Andruw Jones would've been camped under it...
