Philadelphia Eagles (Fantasy Value)

With McNabb returning, a couple of key defensive acquisitions, and the new found confidence that Andy Reid has in his more balanced attack, the Eagles will once again be a top team in the NFC.  That’s great for the fantasy owners who are willing to take a couple of risks.

Brian Westbrook : This is the position the Eagles will start with this season.  After a slow beginning to his career, Westbrook finally had the opportunity to showcase his overall run/catch abilities. Not to take anything away from Jeff Garcia and his success last season, but without Westbrook these Eagles would’ve been in deep trouble.  Look for another impressive season where Westbrook could very easily break the 2000 yard mark in both rushing and receiving.  Definitely a #1 runner on any fantasy franchise and a high draft selection.

Donovan McNabb : First he had to prove that he could perform at the QB position.  He did it!  Now he has to prove that he can stay healthy.  Just bad luck!  Off to the best start in his entire NFL career in 2006, McNabb found himself on the sidelines with injuries that left fantasy owners sick.  Fully recovered this season and ready to play, look for McNabb to pick up where he left off by posting career numbers.  Definitely a starter on any fantasy franchise.

DEFENSE : Hopefully these Eagles have solved their linebacker problems with the addition of Takeo Spikes.  If they don’t find a way to stop the run this season then this unit has absolutely no fantasy value.  If they do, then they are no more than a bye week fill-in.

Reggie Brown : This is the year during most good receivers careers where they either “shxx or get off the pot”.  I think this is the season for Brown to put up the numbers expected of him.  He won’t produce the same numbers as some of the top #1 receivers produce, however, many people will pass on Brown. If this is the case do not wait too long to pull the trigger. Brown will be an exceptional #2 receiver for any fantasy owner and possibly the biggest sleeper in the draft.

L.J. Smith :  Smith falls into the same category as the other TE’s outside of Gates, Gonzalez, and Winslow.  If you have to field a TE, Smith is a quality selection but not until the later rounds.

Kevin Curtis : At best a bye week fill-in and that’s only if you have multiple players on break.

David Akers : Akers has been pretty consistent during his entire career and with ‘Philly’ remanining competitive all season, he is definitely capable of starting on a fantasy roster.

Go check the Westbrook video.

Brown is definitely on the hot seat this season. Taking McNabb in the draft is a huge gamble. Sure you'll be on fire for the first 6-8 games of the season, but after that it's all a huge fog, will he continue his consistency? Will he get injured? I would pass on him or grab him as a backup.

Ha...

Brown isn't on the hot seat...The offense was never really designed to throw a ton of deep balls...it was just changed for TO and it took a mcnabb injury to fix. They know what he is and he's a good receiver...not great...

and McNabb won't drop to a backup fantasy spot...I'd say he'll probably be taken as a 4th or 5th QB, but only because he appears risky...I'd taken him 3rd personally...which depending on the league is a first, but most likely 2nd round pick...

Isn't Romo in the same boat...

I thought the Eagles ran a west coast offense. Doesn't that involve a lot of passes? If Brown doesn't perform well, he's never going to get the big time money and the Eagles are going to be forced to aggresively pursue a reliable #1 WR. Yea, Romo is in the same boat which is why I won't take him in the draft, at least not as my #1. He has "Eli" written all over him as far as his consistancy is concerned. I'm promising myself not to get hyped if we start out 7-1 or 6-2.

It does, but not deep passes, not ones that require a talented receiver corp...Its built around short passes, screens and dump offs...hence the reason B-West is so important... The eagles are the same team that made it to NFC championship game afte game with guys like Thrash, Pinkston, Johnson, Small and the like...Brown is better than all those guys...and its also the reason kevin curtis was brought in...he's a possession receiver...ideal for the WCO...

Very good article. Westbrook is definitely a big factor to the team- I hope Tony Hunt can make a little impact in the running game too, he is the big guy the team has allegedly coveted. Of course it is too early to say. Regarding the defense, Spikes may be a short term solution to the Eagles LB woes, but he is coming back from an injury a couple of years ago and hasn't played much. Spikes is a question mark. I really liked the play of last year's 5th round pick Omar Gaither though, and hope he can improve and really do well this year. He could be a long term success for Philly.

If you look, Spikes player well returning from the achilles...he developed some hamstring or groin trouble though that limited him...He should be fine though...

Stay away from LJ. ALthough this is his contract year, he just had sports hernia surgery. Questions should be asked whether he will hold up during the season.

Somehow the eagles always seem to get it done. Great coaching always raises a players performance (fantasy value). Fluke injuries happen and if McNabb stays away from the unlucky (if there is a such thing) the Eagles and players alike will add tremendous value for any fantasy owner.

Most likely...B-West is a prime example of that...he's a great fantasy player...McNabb should be up there for QBs...and the defense...well that's up in the air fantasy-wise right now
