Peyton and Tony Finally Slew The Dragon

by user Leslie Monteiro

Former Red Sox great Pedro Martinez admitted after the game that the Yankees were his daddy. He said it out of frustration when the Yankees beat him on September 24, 2004. It was a rare honesty by a great competitor. Colts quarterback Peyton Manning and Colts head coach Tony Dungy had to relate to Pedro because Patriots quarterback Tom Brady and Patriots head coach Bill Belichick have owned them in the playoffs and in regular season games since 2003.

The way it was looking in this game, the Patriots were going to do it again. Patriots were not only scoring and capitalizing the Colts mistakes in the first half, but they clearly frustrated Manning by sacking him and then covering his receivers thanks to the help of Asante Samuel, who likely will be a Jet because the Patriots rather develop replacements than paying top dollar to their free agents, and Ellis Hobbs.

The football gods thankfully had mercy on those two gentlemen in the second half. For whatever reason, Manning was able to figure out the Patriots defense. He was starting to throw much better. His running game was very productive. Manning was able to orchestrate several great drives. The best one came in the end with two minutes left. He was able to find his guy when he had to. He made sharp throws to put him and his team in a position to score the touchdown. Joseph Addai, who did a great job as Edgerrin James's replacement this season, scored the game-winning touchdown in the final quarter. His touchdown punched the Colts ticket to Miami to play the Chicago Bears, who defeated the New Orleans Saints in the NFC Championship Game. Colts won the game 38-34.

This last touchdown drive of the game has to be Peyton's big moment of his football career by far. He was not going to be denied of this moment. The Patriots and their fans knew it. Belichick clearly was constipated in the sidelines because he knew that his brilliant defensive schemes was not going to stop him this time.

The impressive thing about the Colts quarterback was how calm and methodical he was out in the field in a big spot. This is something that his brother can learn from in this game. He just did not seem frustrated or flustered. He took a lot of hits, but he kept on ticking. He kept playing out there. He did not give up on himself. He just found a way to get the job done. He has always done that in the regular season, but in big playoff games, he has failed in those situations. Yesterday, he finally overcame his demons and just played like the best quarterback that he is supposed to be. He made the plays that his counterpart, Tom Brady is used to making at this time of the year. That final play that he knew in his heart that he was going to get it done. At this time last year, he could not have felt that way in that same situation.

Everyone can praise Peyton all they want, but do not forget what coach Dungy did either. His leadership was huge in this game. He clearly did not panic or scream like a lunatic (i.e. Tom Coughlin and Brad Childress). He just had his guys playing. He was telling them what plays to run. Him and his staff did a great job with game adjustments in the second half. A great leader finds a way to overcome obstacles. Dungy did that in this game. This was also his finest moment as a head coach.

Dungy has always been a great coach. He does not have to apologize to anyone even if he felt short yesterday. Unfortunately, we live in a society where we judge athletes and coaches on championships. He has never got much attention because he has not gone to the big dance. His Buccaneers teams would fall short which is why he was fired for Jon Gruden, who has proven that he can not win with his own players at Tampa Bay. He has taken the Colts to championship games, but apparently it is not good enough for some critics. Hopefully, those geniuses will start realizing that he can coach. The best part of this victory was seeing this class act getting to that elusive Super Bowl.

One can tell how this win was a huge relief for the Colts quarterback. He was so happy when the game was over. His facial reaction and the way he conducted himself in the press conference said it all. It was like a high school senior graduating high school in a commencement ceremony. This guy wants to win the whole prize. There are many players who seem content to be mediocre or be the runnerup. Not this guy. It has to be painful to hear and read comments about how he will never be a winner or how he will never in the Super Bowl. Plus, he may have like six or seven years left and there is no guarantee that he may be there. It is really good that he is a win away in getting the championship that he desires.

The Patriots were clearly a defining point for those two men. Their success was based on what they did on Sunday. Sooner or later, they had to step up and get the job done or it may never happen. Everyone picked the Patriots to win because they have seen the same scene time after time. No one was going to favor the Colts till the situation was changed. Finally, this happened yesterday. Now people can shut up about the greatness of Belichick and Brady and how they can get into everyone's head.

Maybe good things happen to those that wait. They finally accomplished this in front of their home crowd. It was probably good that they did this at the RCA Dome especially in a thrilling fashion. The place went crazy as soon as Addai scored the final touchdown of the game. Indianapolis was in party mode when Tom Brady got intercepted by backup cornerback Marlin Jackson in the final play of the game.

Those two will definitely be the storylines in the Super Bowl. There will be so much talk about their place in history. With the way things have gone for them in the playoffs, they are not going to be denied in winning a championship. Chicago has played well in the playoffs, but there is no way that Peyton and Tony are not going to be denied of a championship.

After fighting with this dragon in the Patriots, the Bears should be a picnic.

OK, so Peyton finally got past the AFC Championship game. Now he's got the Super Bowl. He hasn't slayed any dragons yet, he's finally wounded it, but can he finish it off? "The Bears should be a picnic." Are you kidding me? If da Bears defense plays against Indy the way they played against N.O., the way they're capable of playing, there's no way it'll be close to a picnic. Peyton's incredible, but there's ten other guys on offense that have to pull their weight. Remember it was only last year when Peyton blamed his offensive line for the loss. It's way shortsighted to say that "there is no way that Peyton and Tony are not going to be denied of a championship."

To me, beating the Pats was huge for both Peyton and Tony. Those two were going to be judged based on how they fare in this game. If they lose the Super Bowl, it won't diminish what they did Sunday. The Patriots clearly have been the Colts problem for years. No matter how good the Colts were, the Patriots would find a way. It sure looked like the Pats were going to do it again. I think it's a big deal in so many ways. At some point, it was now or never. You can only have so many chances. Now, we don't have to hear or read about it. No question this was huge. This is much bigger than the Super Bowl game IMO.

I think Peyton will do fine against the Bears D. I know Dungy and his staff will figure out Lovie's defense. Lovie got his trick of the trade from Dungy.

Bears have played well in the playoffs, but you know what. They played in a JV conference this season. A conference which featured the Giants backing in the playoffs. They did not do well against great teams this year so I like the Colts chances.

Okay, so I was certainly on the bandwagon of lambasting the Pats the past week or so and with good reason, but this article goes way too far, so let me address a few things:

1)"Asante Samuel, who likely will be a Jet because the Patriots rather develop replacements than paying top dollar to their free agents"

You make it sound like the pats don't care about their players. Look if Samuel wants a payday, that's fair enough, but then again, the market is so rip for players what did you expect. The Pats are going to make a business decision, they did it before with other DBs and they will again. If they made all of those moves to keep those players, they wouldn't be the pats we know today. Also, the Pats are in very good to excellent cap shape (i think they're a top 10 team with over 20 mil next yr), so Samuel may come back (I think the pats will focus more on the line, which is much smarter).

2) "Peyton's big moment of his football career by far" Actually, how about TD record...when he wins the SB, then he will trump the TD thing

3) "Belichick clearly was constipated in the sidelines because he knew that his brilliant defensive schemes was not going to stop him this time. " Was Belichick upset...yeah, but at the same time, giving up that score to let the Colts lead by 4, don't you think Bill is thinking "Damn, I guess I have to put Tom Brady in for a game winning drive." Belichick's defense wasn't as good as they needed to be, but they still kept the team in position to win. I honestly think the big difference here was Brady knew he had to score a TD, not get into position for a FG, that makes a world of difference. Sometimes you win and sometimes you lose...

4) "He clearly did not panic or scream like a lunatic (i.e. Tom Coughlin and Brad Childress)." Having seen Childress as the Off. Coord. for the Eagles for the last 3 or 4 years, I don't think If ever seen Brad Childress raise his voice in my life...Coughlin ok...Childress though? Wow Minneasota must really suck

I'm not going to keep complaining, but really, why do you hate the Pats so much, I know why I hate them, but this ripping and building up the other team is boring. The Colts defense played poorly, so did the Pats. Both Qbs played good games and it game down to a Brady mistake...you take one pass away and the game changes 180 degrees...

When have the Patriots ever brought players back? Adam Vinateri, Ty Law, Deion Branch, Willie McGinest, Lawyer Milloy, and several others were showed the door and those guys have been productive. Why should Samuel be different? Jets are ready to overpay. Patriots are a frugal franchise who don't believe in overpaying guys to stay.

Peyton winning this game will trump what he did in the Super Bowl IMO.

There was no way Brady was going to score a TD with the clock ticking. He had like a minute to go. It was just going to be too little too late. As for Childress, the guy is an idiot. He was screaming at Brad Johnson all season during the game not to mention putting his players under the bus in his press conference.

Did I even rip the Patriots in this article? I praise the Colts. I had no agenda in bashing the Pats in this article. The Asante Samuel point was something I pointed out based on the Patriots history in letting players go, which is a fact.

You are so wrong on the Sammuel thing... First, the Pats will resign him because they have a lot of cap room, and very few players to resign. They resigned Seymour last year, so now they just have to resign either him and/or Graham. They have a lot of Cap room, and will be looking to spend it. Second, there is no way in hell the Jets will pay upwards of 10 million to sign him once he hits the open market. The Jets need more than just a CB to be a Super Bowl contender, and to try and win the AFC East. IF they sign Sammuel, they will be going backwards, not forwards because of the cap hit they will take. As for the rest of the Article, there's nothing new to be said. Everyone else has said it all

Everyone has a ton of cap space, i don't think this is as in the bag as you think. But i'm gonna assume you're more up on the Pats than I am (but I'l typically pretty good)

Its either In the Bag, or he's going to a big spender that needs a big name defender (Arizona maybe)? Unless Mangini is drunk out of his mind, and somehow thinks he will be put up there with the Colts and Pats of teams that are constantly preseason Super Bowl picks by Signing him (which isn't true). I say its in the bag because with a lot of cap space, and not a lot of players to resign, they will be more leanient on how much to throw at him, and if he has the option of playing for say San Fransisco for 12 million, or New England for 11 mil, I think he'd come back

Peyton and Dungy went out and did what they had to do in winning that game on Sunday. However, they have dug themselves into such a massive hole over the past few years with poor post season performances, that none of it will matter if they cant win a Super Bowl. They didnt kill the dragon, its just hiding in the corner of the room with the 800 pnd elephant.

I do expect a Colts rout in the Super Bowl. But imagine what Manning & Dungy image would be if the Colts lose. Not likely, but it is something to think about over the next 13 days.
