Petrino is a Bum; But Aren't Most Coaches?

by SportsGerbil

Just 24 hours after his Atlanta Falcons were drubbed by the New Orleans Saints on Monday Night Football, Bobby Petrino resigned as head coach to take over at the University of Arkansas. So, for the second time in 2007, Petrino has broken a contract to bolt for another position. In January, he broke out of a 10-year contract with the University of Louisville to take the Falcons' head coaching position. In an era where contracts seemingly mean nothing to coaches, Petrino may have trumped them all.

This is the first time I have seen a coach leave in midseason to jump for another job. Petrino couldn't even finish the first year of the five year contract he signed with the Falcons. This is the worst example of how ridiculous these coaches have become. I know things have stunk ever since Petrino took over for the Falcons, but when you make a commitment, you don't leave in the middle of the season. Petrino almost makes Nick Saban's decision to bolt the Miami Dolphins look ok. At least he did it at the end of the season, and coached two years. They both lied to their classy owners saying they were not going to leave.

This is probably the last we'll see of big college coaches being hired by NFL teams for awhile. However, I thought that after Saban left for Alabama, and just a few days later Atlanta hired Petrino. So, who really knows, but I do know coaches and their contracts have become a big joke. It has become a major problem with these college football and basketball coaches.

Something needs to be done to severly penalize coaches for leaving places they sign big contracts with. Coaches that get fired still have to get paid by their bosses, so why not something that goes the other way. Athletic directors need to work some language into these contracts. Something that is even more severe than Les Miles's $1.25 million fine should he leave LSU for another job. Maybe something along the lines of the coach having to pay back a certain percentage of what they've already been paid. Remember, Ricky Williams had to pay back his signing bonus for not living up to his contract with the Dolphins. Something can be done. I'm not sure exactly what that can be, but hopefully something will curtail these coaches from backstabbing their employers left and right.

I'm glad he didn't pick UCLA to go hightailing back to the college ranks.

After reading Pat Forde's article about him on ESPN, it made me really not like him. Sometimes you don't know all the things surrounding a guy, and this was one of those times for me.

Maybe NFL owners and colleges should think twice before hiring mercenary head coaches.

He took the Falcon's job to try and figure out how to make Michael Vick into a success. I think he realizes this team is going absolutely nowhere.

Petrino abandoned the Falcons for his own self-gain during the season. That is cowardly. He should have at least waited until the end of the season.

Agreed jumping ship in the middle of the season was a sketch thing to do. However, he went to Atlanta to coach Mike Vick and he is gone now. He has to look out for himself. Coaches jumping ship in the pros does not bother me nearly as much as coaches jumping ship in college.

when opportunity comes a knockin...

you think the arkansas job was just gonna sit...during prime recruiting season? you have to be available to get a pro-job...i understand it...

and i agree with BigP, i would rather see him jump ship from the pros to college...

Less hours, good spot, possible two time Heisman finalist dropping into your lap not a bad place to be. Especially with ATL dropping back to their old ways.

Petrino went to the Falcons to coach a team not just an individual now serving time.

Regardless of the team's record, those players in the locker room didn't deserve their head coach to quit during the season.

If Arkansas really wanted Petrino that bad, they would have waited. Absolutely. Hell, we are only talking a few more weeks anyways. What was Arkansas worried about - Petrino not keeping his end of the bargain? If so, why hire him in the first place?

Ahhh what the fack. I've said my bit.

McFadden is gone...no doubt

But Jones may stay if Petrino commits to him...

The atlanta job is a crappy one...tough city to coach (because no one gives a damn), a dirty hands owner (likes to be very involved...can be good, but also bad), the georgia dome blows....and so on...

It'll be a few years till atlanta is back...

and I'll keep trumpeting...Ron Rivera...please...someone take this guy...he's real good...

i'd love to see him or Ryan (maybe even Jeff Fisher, should the opportunity arise) take the eagles job should it become vacant..

Not that i think it will....in fact, there is no way Reid leaves

but Rivera is a former philly assistant, who i liked a lot, So is fisher...from the way back...and of course, Ryans are always welcome in philly!

Bo once referred to recruiting as pimping. Bo knows. (his straight talk section is very candid concerning college football politics)

Petrino struggled from the moment he arrived in ATL. He has battled with D. Hall and struggled gaining his players respect. By getting out now and getting back to what he knows, he is able to at least save some face, and have some of his on the field creditals left.

I'm disappointed but not surprised. Not in Petrino. You people. Several of the comments above actually justify his reneging on a contract and taking a different job.

To paraphrase:

"Atlanta's gonna suck."

"Less hours in college."

"It was a good opportunity."

The man was under contract.

You either have honor or you don't.
