Petition To The National Football League

About This Petition
ArmchairGM is a first of its kind, fan-driven website. We believe than fans are the most important part of the sports world, as without us, professional sports would not exist. You can learn more about ArmchairGM here.

Over the course of the last few months, we have met many key players within the NFL, including Mr.Rolapp and Mr. Fizgerald. If this petition reaches 10,000 signatories, then on December 13, 2007, we will be sending this petition to these NFL decision-makers. It is our primary goal to represent the fans who are left out in the dark due to the NFL's on-going squabble with faceless cable conglomerates.

With your help, us fans can get what we want -- simply, to watch a football game.

To: Mr. Brian Rolapp, Vice President, Media Strategy, NFL; and

Mr. Brian Fizgerald, Director of Marketing, Digital Media, NFL

Over the course of the past two weeks, we, your customers and fans without the NFL Network have missed two games -- a competitive Colts/Falcons game, and the Dallas/Green Bay prelude to the NFC championship game. The NFL and cable providers such as Time Warner Cable, Comcast, and Cablevision cannot come to a deal that will let me, and hundreds of thousands of others, watch the games on the NFL Network.

In a few weeks, the ridiculous may happen. The New England Patriots may be 15-0, with one game to play, at the New York Giants. Those of us without the NFL Network will be unable to watch this historic game.

Instead of serving its customer base, the NFL has taken to buying ads, asking their fans to petition Congress and/or the cable companies, even putting up a website called "IWantMyNFLNetwork.com". It purports to tell us why the cable companies are so evil, and what we're missing on the NFL Network. But we, the customers, are not fools. We know that this dispute involves two sides. Each side involves a mega-corporation, with high-paid lawyers, lobbyists, and businessmen. Each side insults their would-be customer by telling us that, no, the mega-corporation knows best, and we're better off with (or without) the NFL Network.

These words are hollow. Action is required. With the Patriots/Giants game approaching, the NFL has the opportunity to tilt the tables: Stream the game -- one game -- live, online.

It is the ultimate solution for the NFL. Give the customers a taste of what we're missing. Propagandize all you want during the 30-second commercial breaks. Sell highly targeted ads to DirecTV, Dish Network, Sprint, and other strategic partners. Show us why "IWantMyNFLNetwork." Do it for the League. Do it for the Network. Do it for your customers.

We, the fans, want our NFL Network.

We, the undersigned, demand that the NFL stream the Patriots/Giants game on NFL.com.

Screw the NFL. Their greed has brought this situation upon us. The NFL could have been a little less greedy and sold the rights to these games to TNT.. but NOOOOOO, they had to think they could create a network that people would want to watch. Has anyone watched the NFL network any time other than a live game? That would be "no"... because their programming is horrid. The Paint Drying network would get better ratings. The point is, until the NFL decides to eliminate the monopoly DirecTV has with Sunday Ticket, the cable companies won't budge. Forget the basic cable tier and cost per subscriber argument... the real battle is over Sunday Ticket.

I watch the NFL network quite often, I find very entertaining. I have noticed that here in San Diego when ESPN has a charger game they allow a local station broadcast the game. I don't know why the NFL does not do the same thing one day they might realize they are cutting their own throat by denying the masses the ability continue watching the sport that they love. I fear the ultimate extension of what the NFL will do with the games-- pay per view.

The NFL network does not exist to serve the fans, it exists to serve the team owners. Quit blaming the cable networks, and admit that your #1 priority is to line your own pockets. BROADCAST THE GAMES ON TV THAT EVERYBODY CAN GET.

Chris Morris-Burlington,Vt This would be a perfect opportunity for the NFL to show it really does care about us fans by making sure we can all get a chance to see history made assuming the Pats are still undefeated(as all we Pats fans hope).Even if they aren't,the league should still stream the game anyway.MLB.com did the same thing this summer with all of Bonds' AB's until he broke the record, because they understood the significance of the event and felt all deserved the chance to see it.Cheers to MLB for leading the way, let's hope the NFL follows suit.So far Roger Goddell seems to be a really good commisioner and I'm hopeful he will make this happen.Mostly,a HUGE thanks to all you guys here running the armchairGM site who posted this petition.A terrific idea that hopefully helps this situation become resolved soon

I was able to watch the Cowboy/Packer game. Personally, it was the worst broadcast I have ever seen and I ultimately turned down the sound and turned on the radio. I actually ordered DishNetwork so I could watch the game. MISTAKE. I will not watch another one, I will simply turn on the radio and listen. Seems like a monopoly to me, a ripoff to the fans, and GREED at its best. I blocked the station on my receiver in protest. We plan to host parties during the games that are blocked out locally and watch other games instead. Jim - Fort Worth, Tx

Sadly this is the ongoing squeeze of every last dollar out of major league sports. Baseball dropped another chunk of free broadcasts into the paid category in 2007. The NBA, realizing that they have a large audience that won't pay for the package, at least got their channel on basic cable tier so they still control the revenue from the shows but give the public a "free" advertising-supported product.

What is very scary is how this big-brother control of sports is going to affect your ability to watch things, and the truth of the sports themselves. Don't see MLB.com doing those hard-hitting Barry Bonds pieces, now do you?

Bill Jordan, Akron, Ohio. The NFL does not need any more money from the fans. It costs enough to attend a game. Please let us watch it from home without breaking the bank.

The NFL is essentially holding these games hostage from the millions of fans who do NOT have the lame NFL Network. It's time for the NFL to wake up and realize that without the fans, the NFL would be nothing!! Commissioner Goodell has the power to move any and all of the remaing NFL Network games to one of the big three networks (NBC, FOX, or ESPN), yet he has already stated that the Patriots/Giants game will NOT be moved off of the NFL network. Nice job, Goodell......way to piss off millions of fans.......you're a public relations genius. My local NBC station (WCSH-6 in Portland, Maine) even made an offer to the NFL to carry the Patriots/Giants game here.........and of course, the NFL refused the offer. Time for the NFL to stop being so greedy and start listening to the fans!!

Being a Sports Bar Operator, I will admit that the NFL Network is great for business. However, the NFL needs to take a page out Mark Cuban's book, "Give the consumer what they want". We, as consumers do not mind having a network dedicated to the sport, however, we DO mind not being able to get the damn channel, this is absurd in 2007 that these companies cannot come to terms. One more thing, if the NFL Network is going to continue to pursue this debauchery can we at least have some quality camera angles and more importantly commentary...who the heck is "Rick Romo"?!?!

Rudy Longbrake Cleveland, Oh I speak as a FORMER employee of one of the Cable companies listed in this letter. With out going into to much detail, the NFL Network is asking a ludicrous amount per sub (each house hold carrying that cable service) to carry this "Network". Its upto and sometimes even more than what HBO is charging. The NFL should be ashamed at what they are doing.
