[edit] Biography

Peter Stastny was a very successful player for HC Slovan Bratislava in his native Czechoslovakia during the 1970's when he and his brother Anton defected to Canada in 1980. The defection caused much controversy at the time as Peter went on to represent Canada in the Canada Cup. The next season Peter and Anton were joined on the Quebec Nordiques by another brother Marian.

The Stastnys have become one of the leading hockey families. Peter's eldest brother served as an assistant coach on the Slovakian National Team. Peter also has two sons playing in the NHL. Yan Stastny made his debut with the Edmonton Oilers in 2005-06. Paul Stastny is a member of the Colorado Avalanche and was a finalist for the 2006-07 Calder Memorial Trophy.

Following his hockey career Peter returned to Slovakia and entered politics. In 2004, he headed the European elections candidate list of the main ruling-coalition party in Slovakia, the SDKU, and was elected as one of its three Members of the European Parliament.
