Pete Hotaling (Peter James Hotaling) was born on December 16, 1856 in Mohawk, New York. He made his Major League debut on May 1, 1879 for the Cincinnati Reds. In 1879, his rookie year, he hit .279 with 1 home run and 27 RBI. Hotaling played for the Cincinnati Reds, Cleveland Spiders, Worcester Ruby Legs, Boston Red Caps and Brooklyn Trolley Dodgers over the course of his 9 year career.

Most people believe that Pete Hotaling's best season was 1887, when he stole 43 bases, hit for a .299 average and knocked in 94 runs.
