Pete Gillespie (Peter Patrick Gillespie) was born on November 30, 1851 in Carbondale, Pennsylvania. He made his Major League debut on May 1, 1880 for the Troy Trojans. In 1880, his rookie year, he hit .243 with 2 home runs and 24 RBI. Gillespie played for the Troy Trojans and New York Gothams over the course of his 8 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Pete Gillespie's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1883, when he hit for a .314 average and knocked in 62 runs. However, others believe that it was 1887, when he stole 37 bases.
