Pepper Martin (Johnny Leonard Roosevelt Martin) was born on February 29, 1904 in Temple, Oklahoma. He made his Major League debut on April 16, 1928 for the St. Louis Cardinals. In 1931, his rookie year, he hit .300 with 7 home runs and 75 RBI. Martin played for the St. Louis Cardinals for his entire 12 year career.

There is some disagreement on what was Pepper Martin's most productive season. Some believe that it was 1936, when he hit for a .309 average and knocked in 76 runs. However, others believe that it was 1933, when he stole 26 bases, hit for a .316 average and knocked in 57 runs.
