Pennington injury a shame, treatment by fans worse

by Matt Waters

[The following isn’t directed at all Jet fans. If you are able to read this message and comprehend it, you probably don’t fall into the blanket statement.]

I was just pondering, in between classes, the exact ratio of mentally competent, sane Jet fans, versus those who utilize a football team as a creative outlet for misery and contempt. I'm thinking 1:50 is a solid ballpark hypothesis.

I couldn't be more disgusted to be a gang green loyalist at the moment. What kind of fans cheer an injury to their starting quarterback, especially when said player is second all time on the completion percentage list, and has led the team to postseason play every year in which his admittedly fragile health has allowed?

I've come to a sad realization. A great majority of Jet fans just aren't very bright. In fact, they couldn't be called anything less than stupid, lest I insult a lesser adjective. They allow themselves to be influenced by the insults of opposing fans, and similarly dimwitted analysts. Instead of defending their franchise player, they are quick, painfully quick, to join the chorus. Chad Pennington has bled for this organization; he has put his career on the line, essentially selling his legacy for a playoff run back in 2004. And how do Jet fans treat him?

Like a proverbial prodigal son, as if he asked for this misfortune.

What planet are you morons on, anyway? The man went 16-21 with two touchdown passes, and you applaud his possible demise? What the hell?

Kellen Clemens is never going to be Chad Pennington. Chad Pennington carried this team to the playoffs last season. With an inferior game manager at the controls, the Jets win seven last season, tops.

Jet fans are so simple minded. They are just thirsting, pitifully desperate, for a Quarterback above reproach, perfect in every single way. Why is that? For victory? Hell no. It’s explicitly so they can shove it in people's faces, for the pure purposes of obnoxious reverie. Basically, Jet fans are willing to run Chad Pennington out of town because some imbecile on TV told them to. Wow. Real reasonable. That’ll be hilarious when he wins a Super Bowl with the Bears.

The front office should be derided, for foolishly refusing to bend to the reasonable demands of Pete Kendall, crippling the offensive line. Chad Pennington should be protected by the legions that betray him on a moment's notice. Instead, he is buried.

Class.

Kellen Clemens was wildly applauded for completing his initial pass Sunday, an outlet swing that fell well short of a first down. The fans didn't seem to care. Maybe they were drunk. Maybe they weren’t aware the punting unit was dragging onto the field, and their season was sinking into an abyss. Maybe they had a new hero to crown, and, eventually, tear down.

Maybe there are karmic forces at work here.

Long time since Super Bowl 3.

I've always wondered how Jets fans are considered dumb...especially when the only other option is the giants...hmm...

What about the Bills? They are the only true New York team.

Very low for them to cheer for Pennington coming out due to injury. He's not a great QB, but he's not that bad - so what if he can't throw the long ball...he can flat-out win games.

It didn't happen. I was at the game. The fans were cheering Clemens entering the game. They were not cheering Pennington's injury. In fact, there was a long discussion about this at www.nj.com/jets and they came to the same conclusion.

Word. And I thought he was a great QB from 02-04, before the arm problems. Now, I think he's still in the top 15, even top 10. I'd take him over a ton of others. Thanks for commenting.

Metsjetsdevils, dude, I'd really like to believe that. I really would. But they cheered for Clemens' coming in like Pennington had stunk out the joint. And they treated his first completion like something fantastic. That's what I didn't get. I'll still stick by this, but hey, I could be wrong. I'd love to be, in this case, in fact. I also hope nobody takes this too personally, it's a quick article, and it's what I felt at the time. So, no hard feelings anybody, if you hate number 10... we can still be cool, lol

I think it is different to cheer for the backup than to cheer a guy's injury. Jets fans are a little tired on Pennington's pop gun arm. I am a huge Pennington supporter but even I am a little excited to see what Clemens has to bring to the table.

The backup QB is always one of the most popular guys on the team.

It sounded like some were cheering Pennington get hurt. Not all, but some. Saying that they were only cheering Clemens coming in is kind of ridiculous becaus there were cheers the second Pennington first stumbled. Then the cheers got louder as he limped off the field. HOWEVER, it wasn't as if the whole Stadium were applauding. Furthermore, there were many Patriot fans at the game and it's possible they were cheering. There are just as many classless Pats fans as there are classless Jets fans. Also, it wasn't as if Chad was on the ground, barely moving. He was hobbling. It was clear he was hurt, but not seriously hurt.

PS: I hate the Jets and hate their fans, but even I'm not really critical of this. A few frustrated morons that have been drinking for hours booing a minor injury doesn't merit classifying an entire team's fanbase as being moronic.

You know, it's weird, becuase, my first reaction to the fans cheering was that they were cheering for Pennington's injury, and Clemens' oppurtunity, as said earlier in another comment. I mean, that was my gut reaction. There wasn't a second where I thought they were cheering his effort to get off the field, and, ironically enough, Nantz and Simms had the same reaction I did. They were disgusted. But I am always open to different viewpoints. I think I'm still a little pissed almost all the Jet fans I know jumped off the Pennington bandwagon just because his injury problems. You know, some even suggested tanking LAST year for Quinn. [this was before Russell lapped him] How crazy is that? It just annoys me how fickle people can be sometimes, Chad was a freaking diety in a New York back in 2002. That's life, though. Ok, gotta go to class, thanks for the comments, hope I have something more positive next time!

I think fans are just fed up of waiting for what seems like an eternity for the ball to reach the receiver.

I agree with MJD. The fact of the matter is that the Jets lose the ability to stretch the field because Pennington cannot effectively throw the deep ball. The problem lies with Clemens. If he throws for 300 yards and 3 TDs by some fluke of God against the Ravens, then what does Mangenius do?

Oh, damn one more comment, but this is actually important: Rawbeezeitz, I was hoping the blanket statement in the article came across as tongue in cheek, I even make a crack in the opening about the reading comprehension of the people bashing Pennington last Sunday. [j/k if you were or whatever] It was really a style thing. For this short of an article, it just would have been clumsy for me to say, " But SOME Jet fans are jerks" know what I mean? The way I wrote it was easier, and ultimately better, for something this short. That's why I'm really hoping nobody takes it personally, but what can you do? Ok, really got 2 go.

Sidebar:

The prodigal son is a parable of a man with two sons. The younger son demands his inheritance while his father is still living. He takes the money, leaves the country and parties the money away (I paraphrase). After he wastes the inheritance, he returns to his father and begs forgiveness. To the chagrin of the hard-working and loyal brother, the father welcomes the prodigal son with open arms.

What does this have to do with the Jets and Pennington?

Well it sounded good. I was just trying to say Pennington didn't waste any of his talent, he just had bad luck, and a bad shoulder. So his treatment at the hands of some [not all] Jet fans baffled me. Plus, it looked good when I wrote it. Any time you can improperly mix religon and sports, you've got to take that chance. Oh yeah. Thanks for reading.
