Penguins Update - Out with the old - Recchi sent to waivers

The Pittsburgh Penguins officially placed 39-year-old Mark Recchi on waivers this afternoon, marking what is likely the end of his career with Pittsburgh.

Ironically enough, at last night's home game against the Phoenix Coyotes, the Penguins commemorated Recchi's 500 goal milestone in the form of a bobble head souvenir. Recchi was a healthy scratch for last night's game, as has been the case for the past two weeks or so.

Recchi, also appointed alternate captain prior to the season's start, managed only eight points (2-6) in his 19 games with the Pens.

With the recent and younger talent working its way up through the Pens' system, it is almost evident at this point that Tyler Kennedy has found a full-time job. Initially considered as part of a demotion that sent Alain Nasreddine down to WBS, Coach Therrien was quick to recall Kennedy, a decision he has not since regretted.

In 13 games played, Kennedy has six points (4-2) and has exhibited versatility on lines shared with Gary Roberts and Jordan Staal.

Now taking guesses as to who will pick up Recchi. My pick is Columbus, as officially rumored. I'll also make a backup guess and say Washington.

A sad sight to say the least. Recchi was always one of my favorite players, and seeing him win the Cup with the hurricanes (along with Brindamour) was a nice consolation prize once the Flyers were eliminated.

He did get his cup, which is more than a lot of players past and present can say. When the Pens let him go and he signed to Carolina, it was a move the team said they regretted. Eventually he did return for his third stint with the team, but this time he got the boot again. I really wonder where things stand with Lemieux and him, or if it wound up being more of a Shero/Therrien move.

I cannot say if this is ultimately the end of a great career for Mark Recchi, but if so, I believe he'll well-remembered among long-time hockey fans. I remember his days in Philadelphia as well as Pittsburgh for the most part and was a class act and a good leader among the NHL veterans. Who knows, maybe Carolina will bring him back one more time for a second Cup run? Certainly a tough decision to make by the Penguins in letting go a long-time player that loved the game.

Yeah, I agree. The guy always played with a level of class unmatched by his fellow players or opponents, which when added to his career accomplishments is the sheer reason he is such a good leader. I'm not 100% sure what the Pens were paying him, but if I'm not mistaken it was around $1.8 mil. The Pens still have about $14 Mil open in the cap.

Tough way for Recchi to leave the club. I wish him the best and hopefully he can catch on somewhere.

It was pretty obvious this was his last year. Just a drag to have to go out like that.

I'd love to see him back in Philly. One of my favorite players of all-time. Won't happen but I'd love it if it did.

You never know. He came back to the Pens twice. A return to Philly is not entirely out of the question, although I wonder what room the Flyers have in the cap for a $1 Mil+ 39-year-old veteran.

Detroit has a history of signing ageing players. Verbeek, Hull, Robitaille to name a few. Also, Detroit hasn't the best depth at RW. As an outside bet, Recchi to the Wings may not be out of the question.

Perhaps not out of the question, but beneficial to the Wings?
