Penguins Recap - Penguins 5 Devils 0

What better way to end a four game road trip then with a shutout? The win also puts the road trip record at 2-2.

Now listen up guys. I've found the key to a Penguins victory. First, you must drive to your local liquor store and purchase three beers that go by the name of Red East; the 'classic' beer of Russia. You must thereby go about drinking one before the game, and during each intermission. Then and only then will you invoke the spirit of Malkin to lead the Penguins to a victory.

I suppose that's all a farce. Afterall, he only had a single assist on the night, but what an assist it was. From his knees on what would have been a tripping call, Malkin dished it off to Sykora who popped it into the net past his former teammate Brodeur for a 3-0 lead.

Sid was no doubt the star of the night, with two goals (eight and nine on the season) in his 13th consecutive game with a point. This was also his second two-goal performance on the season, the first coming against Colorado last week.

To be honest with you, I think the best goal of the night came on Adam Hall's re-direct in front of the net late in the first. On a shot that would have wound up in the corner of the rink, Hall re-directed an Orpik shot to net the second goal of the game.

I'd also like to know how an Ashom punch to the back of Laraque's head results in a Laraque penalty. I suppose it was balanced out in that Mottau high-sticking call.

Tonight's game also marks the second shutout of the season for the Penguins but the first of the year for Sabourin, whose play may very well have earned him a starting role. Dany Sabourin - the key to Pittsburgh victories?

I suppose it's safe to say the battle is on for the Pens' netminders. Sabourin vs Fleury in a fight to the death. Alot of talk has circulated with regards to the man between the pipes for the Pens. If you want my honest opinion, I say give the nod to Sabourin, pick up a veteran backup and ditch Fleury come contract negotiation time in January. With whatever money is left, try and secure a defensive-defenseman for the playoffs. Now please keep in mind, I'm saying this as an impartial fan. I will not forget Fleury's 40 wins from last season, but if wheeling and dealing in the way I just mentioned brings home the cup, then I'm all for it.

The powerplay clicked AGAIN tonight, for the 14th time in 14 games. Incredible.

And what's really better than a 5-0 shutout against the Devils? (Well almost better). Watching Brodeur get pulled in favor of Kevin Weekes. Sigh. Truly brings a tear of joy to my eye.

Better luck next time Devils. See you next Monday.

Big shock - the Devils suck. That makes a perfect trifecta...

I can only assume TB is talking about the trifecta of the New York Jets, New York Mets and New Jersey Devils. Not the perfect trifecta of Brooke Burke, My g/f and me. =)

I couldn't wait to read your recap Frank, great stuff.

Oh, and where is Marty Brodeur? That's right there he is, sitting on the bench looking all lost and forlorn not even the thought of banging another sister-in-law cheered him, LMAO!

GO PENS!

The Pens have a decent Goalie prospect playing somewhere in Alaska this year. He came to rookie camp. All in all, I don't think Sabourin had to do to much but when the Pens needed him he came up big. Right now he should be the starter, but knowing Therrien and his love of the ever-changing line-ups, he will probably rotate the two of them. Just remember Frank, Hasek took quite some time to mature also, maybe the Pens should make MAF the backup like Hasek was early in his career.

I don't think Sabourin is starter material. He is 27 and getting a shot mostly because he was coached by Therien in the minors. If they wanted to let MAF adjust slowly they could, but I think they would have to acquire a veteran netminder.

That is exactly what they should have done in the offseason, is get a vet goalie. But they didn't. So now Therrien has to play the hot hand and it seems like the team really rallies around Sabourin for some reason. MAF has a sick amount of talent, he just needs a vet to pound those damn fundamentals into his head.

Now that is really stupid to write. The guy just got a friggin' shutout. Or do the Devils just suck that bad?

I agree Steely, Thibault was a great backup. Not to mention, last year while playing backup for Fleury he started a game at Continental against the Devils and the Penguins shut them out 3-0. Perhaps similar to starters from the Canadiens having such success against the Penguins, maybe backups from the Pens dominate the Devils?

probably sucks for MAF though because he was probably a Brodeur fan growing up and wants badly to play well against him.

The Devils new arena is pretty awesome -- although I think its about 7 years too late. I was little disappointed with the turnout, but I think it would be pretty different if they had the team from early 2000. I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw Marty get pulled. So sad. On the plus side, the beer selection is pretty damn good (had some Sam, Blue Moon, and a Brooklyn Lager under the station "Beers of Newark", which i guess isn't ready yet :P ). The bufflo tenders were probably some of the best I've ever had. Oh and yeah they played hockey.

Pulling the goalie is always a reflection ont he goaltending. sometimes, as tonight, it is a reflection on the team. No reason for Marty to be out there if the team is just going to leave him out there all alone.

Congrats to Sabourin on his first career shutout. It was an easy one as the Devils didn't challenge him all night. The Devils were completely out of sync, while the Penguins were in sync. While the first goal was the product of a lucky bounce, the next four were all the product of crisp passing. The thing about the Penguins is that they got very lucky. They got the 1st rd pick 2 years in a row and in both years there was a true star player available. Having Malkin and Crosby on the same line is absurd. I don't know if two players with that much talent have ever played on the same line before. I have no real comments on the game. I hated the officiating as always. Too many ticky-tak penalties and missed calls. The first period was the worst where the refs screwed up back to back calls. The call on Laroque should of either been a non-call or a call on both he and Asham. The call on Clarkson was a phantom call. The refs should just let the teams play. They did on Saturday in the Devils-Rangers game and it created a great game.

Malkin was a second overall pick. And we didn't get luck per se. It is you who always reminds us Pens fans of the bad years. The Pens are a great example of how to rebuild. We have 7 first round picks in our line-up. That's just good scouting.

What I meant was that sometimes you get the first overall pick and the pickings are slim like Roman Hamrlik. The Penguins happened to get the top 1-2 pick in years when there was a true stud available. Thats what I meant by lucky.

I don't know if you can really say Malkin had alot of luck. Afterall, he kinda had to stomach it out for a few years in Russia before coming over to the states. Then, in one of his first preseason games last year, he and Recchi collided and Malkin dislocated his shoulder. I'd also like to say - sure, we got lucky with two great back to back picks, but that's kinda what happens when you get unlucky in the regular season for four straight years.

Oh and I'll agree, the Devils didn't really put up much of a threat tonight either. But the Devils are a team that prides themselves on defense. So I think it's more disappointing to a team like that to have given up five goals rather than lose a game 2-1. The Penguins defense? I personally think it was driven by the forechecking and even backchecking of Laraque, who was playing like a man possessed.

He was probably pissed about that early penalty. I wonder what affect it has on a guy like Laroque when there is noone on the other team's roster likely to fight him. The Devils have some decent middle weights in Rupp, Asham and Clarkson and some toughness on defense with Brookbank, but no one in the same class as Laroque.

Laraque is a solid player all around. He is still a third or fourth liner but he is awsome in the corners. I would love to see what he could do if they put him on defense or in front of the goal on the PP.

The great thing about Laraque is how he makes play work with sheer strength and muscle. His "almost goal" that turned out to be an assist to Sykora in the home opener win over Anaheim is a prime example. He's also a monstrous distraction, able to draw penalties through irritating others (which is what I thought he did against Ashom) and opens up lanes for the snipers. I was surprised to see him with Malkin and Crosby, but it kinda makes sense.

Well, that's the problem, how do you get the "muscle" on the ice with our superstars. It does no good to have an enforcer if he's not there to take on the guys that are pushing Crosby and Malkin around. What use is it for Laraque to beat up the other teams tough guy when he probably wasn't the one messin' with our superstars.

Teams have done that before. McSorley was always on the ice with the Great One back in the Edmonton Dynasty days. Also frees up Malone to play on another line any maybe add more depth. I would only expect it to happen if teams start taking liberties with Crosby and/or Malkin.

I don't think its a bad idea. He's a good possession guy and he can plant himself in front of the net and pick up garbage goals all season long. He is great behind the net and on the boards and he could protect the young guns. It's worth a try I think.
