Penguins Recap - Penguins 3 Islanders 2

Tonight, for only the second time this month, the Penguins walked away with a win - this time over the rival New York Islanders.  Crosby continues his point streak (18 games), Fleury gets a win and the Penguins make the most of what has been an otherwise dismal November.

How did it happen?  The answer to that is rather simple.

Kr_Vostok_ex_Site_s.jpg

It looks like a small bottle of champagne, but it tastes like heaven.  When I drink one before a game, it emits powers that manage to not only promote the play of Evgeni Malkin, but apparently any other Russian National on the Penguins as evident by Gonchar's play tonight.  As long as I keep drinking and edge closer to alcoholism, the Penguins will continue winning and edge closer to the cup.  It's a risk I'm willing to take...

At least, that's my theory.

Overall a very solid game tonight.  I wouldn't say Fleury looked superb, but he definitely managed to make some otherwise superior saves.  His one Achilles heal, however, is his inability to redirect the shots to the corner.  Rebounds just sit at the mouth of the crease, and if it weren't for the heads up play of his defenders it could've been an entirely different game.

Speaking of: Kris Letang's first game of the season tonight.  He didn't break any records or achieve much, but he did stick to his man all game, at some points boxing out the crease.  The one Islanders goal that managed to tie the score at two may have been his fault.  He bit early on the faceoff and opened up the bottom of the net.  Brooks Orpik had to come across the crease to stick it to Vasicek but was unable to get there in time.  Over commitment has been a problem with Letang in the past, and was the one thing many coaches said he had to work on before his re-entry into the NHL.

Tyler Kennedy, initially sent back down to Wilkes Barre-Scranton, made an appearance on the roster tonight in place of the scratched Mark Recchi.  He also remained silent on the night, despite having a golden opportunity to seal an empty netter towards the end of the game.  Rather than take an otherwise sure-shot, Kennedy passed it into traffic and caused my heart rate to beat further out of rhythm until the final seconds of the game.

My ""Hero of The Night Award" goes to Georges Laraque.  The man makes his presence known and no one is going to get in his way lest they choose to be run over.  Scoring isn't exactly his forte, but seeing a guy like him step up tonight is exactly what the rest of the offense needs to use as an example.  The deeper the scoring goes in the lines, the more games the team will win.

The Penguins also played a very disciplined game, keeping the Islanders scoreless on only two powerplay attempts.  Orpik has to know when to keep his mouth shut and his hands down, as he single handedly killed a powerplay before a second could tick off the clock by mouthing off and following an Islander to the box.  I suppose this is something to expect when you run a team of youngsters.

At last the Pens have broken their four game skid, in turn also sending the Islanders on course for two straight losses.  An even bigger game awaits the team Saturday when the Rangers come to town.

It was a solid game all around. I think Letang had a decent first game and he seems to be the only defensman on the team who understands about clearing the crease. So props to him if he can keep it up.

I thought Fluery also had a decent game. Therrien said he has been sitting him so that they could get a few things worked out in practice and that he would be getting the majority of the starts as the year goes on. I think it worked, it's good I'm not a coach cause I would have just kept playing him.

Laraque, what can I say? I've been telling the guy in the cubical next to me for some time now that Laraque needs to be on the ice with more talent, it paid off. I don't expect a 20 goal season out of him but he has a way of staying in front of the net and has great puck control in the corners.

All in all, the Pens put a complete game together I hope they can use this game as motivation or momentum to start climbing the ladder in the Atlantic division. Let's go Pens.

A 20 goal season is unlikely, but man I'd love to see it. The best part about him being on the line with more talent is, he wasn't the setup guy. HE was being set up by Crosby in front of the net, which is basically a no-fly zone for any player defending Laraque.

Yeah, something to help him clear his mind. I wouldn't be surprised if he's a healthy scratch for tomorrow's game or at least a game in the not so distant future. Therrien sat Recchi and Sydor last night, Colby a few times and of course Fleury - all of which were done in the aftermath of poor performances. I think Staal is next to sit, and if he doesn't come back strong then a WBS visit may be in his eminent future.

Ha, Hooray for the power of Russian Beer! Продолжайте пить это Франк, и мы будем продолжать побеждать. Or in other words, the more Frank drinks the more we win!

Anyways, I saw the Islander equalizer the same way it did look like Letang bit early after the face-off which left Orpik out to dry.

Steel Town makes a good observation in that I also like seeing Larouqe playins with Sir Sid every once in a while. Not every shift mind you but I do think Georges plays well when he gets the odd shift on the top unit.

Ok good - I didn't want to seem to overly critical on Letang so I'm glad someone else saw it too. Georges, I feel, is a player who knows the definition of clutch. The Pens needed someone to come up big last night, and so they asked of somethin big from the big guy himself. Nice goal and a nice win, but I can't help but remain disappointing in Jordan Staal. I really wanna see him pick up the slack...

Agreed about Staal. I think he might need a little time in Wilkes-Barre. Not a demotion per se, but a tune up.
