Penguins Recap - Flyers 3 Penguins 1

by FrankD

Ask any coach and he'll tell ya, "The best way to win a game, unless you're the Penguins, is to give up two goals in the first five minutes".  Somehow, this strategy worked well for the Avalanche and Islanders, but not the Penguins.

Talk about deflating.  Coming off a Devil beat down on Monday night, the Penguins found themselves in the hole tonight by the score of 2-0 before Therrien could even switch up the lines half a dozen times.  He'd eventually go on to do it anyways, even working Laraque on to the powerplay unit  in hopes of opening up the front -but alas, to no avail.

Despite practicing and saying he'd have a go on the night, Ryan Whitney opted to sit out one more in favor of playing tomorrow against the Rangers.  I'd like to have seen him play both games, but if I had to choose I'd say take the one with the Rangers.

Could Alain Nasreddeine be any more worthless?  I'd almost rather see Ruutu take a stab at being on defense rather than having Nas running around and fumbling the puck like a peewee. Speaking of, the Pens REALLY need a right-handed shot somewhere in that lineup, most preferably on the blueline.  Eaton's diving attempt to swat a puck in on the backhand might have had a better chance had he possessed a right-hand shot.  Sykora's one-timer might have gone in had Malkin's pass been to a righty shooter.  And as far as Gonchar goes, that guy plays more kicks to the point on the backhand than I've ever seen a defenseman do.  I'm not saying the Penguins lack quality puck movement (minus this game), but a right-handed shot would be stellar.

Perhaps it's time for: "Hi, Mr. Letang? It's Coach Therrien".

Come on Therrien, what are you waiting for?

I don't blame Sabourin for this one.  Frankly the score had a chance of being close to 5-1, especially coming on that Brierre blank right on the goal line.  If you had to blame anything this game, it'd be the inability to clear their own zone, poor puck handling both in AND out of the zone and a insanely good Flyers penalty kill.

Thus ends the 14 consecutive games with a powerplay goal. Thus ends another 8-0 season against the Flyers.

So much for starting a divisional winning streak.

But hey, at least Crosby kept his scoring streak on a roll with his assist to Malone in the closing seconds of the first.

Perhaps this year the Flyers will be the Penguins of last year, as it almost seems certain they're on their way to a HUGE turn around.  Well played, Flyers - well played indeed.

See you again on Saturday 'round your parts.

Ech, what to say. I figured the Flyers would have their tails up early given our success against them last year. I agree, Letang's time has come.

This game was over before it started as Sabourin forgot it was his job to stop the pucks. Maybe he thought MAF was playing goalie last night. Its like I said after he shut out the Devils, he is a career minor leaguer, and if the Pens are serious about finding someone to split time with MAF and help him develop, a guy like Sabourin is not the answer. The Leafs have been trying to trade Andrew Raycroft. I wonder if he would be the right match?

The guy is good enough to blank the Devils but not good enough to play in the NHL. Brilliant.

Sabourin only had to make about 2 quality saves against the Devils. It was the Pens forwards and defensmen that made for a shutout. Last night when the Pens couldn't protect Sabourin from the wrath of the Flyers his true abilities showed.

Sounds more like an indictment against the futile offense of the New Jersey Devils.

More like an indictment of Broduer and the Devils defense that couldn't keep the Pens out of their zone.

Sabourin gives up three goals and the team loses 3-1...But Brodeur gives up 5 and Sabourin is a career minor leaguer? I'm not saying Brodeur belongs in the minors, but when it comes to a goalie you have to look at their surroundings before you make a statement like that.

The Pens game was a clear indictment of the entire Devils team. They didn't show up to play. Period. They did nothing offensively. They did nothing defensively. They were outworked and outclassed by a better team that night. Because they beat the Devils soundly that night does not all of a sudden make a guy like Sabourin an NHL star. I can't say the two early goals he gave up were entirely his fault, but he did not look good on either. I think anyone who knows anything about hockey knows that if the Penguins are relying on Danny Sabourin to get them to and through the playoffs their Stanley Cup goals will have to be on hold for another year. MAF is the future in net for Pittsburgh but has shown that he still needs some seasoning. The Pens could afford to add another goaltender to share the load until MAF is fully ready for the big time. The Pens have plenty of youth, so even if it is not this year, they can probably survive the loss of Rechi and Roberts to old age and count on Crosby, Malkin, and Staal to have them among the best offensive teams in the league for the next 10 years.

Oh trust me, Sabourin is not an all-star. That's obvious when it took a goalie at his age (27) to finally get his first career shutout. Even still, prior to his start with the Penguins this season he only played in 14 NHL games, despite having stints on three other teams - including the Penguins the first time. There is still $12.4 Mill open in the Penguins cap. I think acquiring Letang, a right-handed defenseman and a goalie would be in their best interest. Do what the Flyers did, find a guy for a year like Biron and lock him up at the end of the season if he's playing to your expectations.

Why the hell do you care so much about this Danny Sabourin? If you really believe he sucks, then you should want Sabourin to keep playing for the Penguins. Aren't your beloved Devils gonna see these guys again this season or do you want a "better" opposing goalie to play against?

You confuse me. How is Sabourin not the definition of a career minor leaguer? In 7 professional seasons he has played 83 games in the ECHL, 137 games in the AHL and 22 NHL games. The most games he has ever played in the NHL in a single season is 9. In case you were keeping track, 91% of his games have been played in the minor leagues. 34% were played in the ECHL, 57% were played in the AHL and .09% were played in the NHL.

I would be glad if Dany Sabourin were who the ens were counting on to lead them to the playoffs. My point is that you and I both know that that is either not the case, or if it is, the Penguins are in trouble.

As for Brodeur being a "career" minor leaguer, in 16 seasons, he has played a total of 32 games in the minor leagues.

Sabourin gave up less goals than Marty last game, thats for sure. I am pretty sure that I am going to stick with Marty though and you can keep Sabourin.

MetsJetsDevils makes a compelling argument against Danny Sabourin.

Really, he does. Bravo.

In light of this assessment, I propose that ArmchairGM use its powerful lobbying voice to get Mr. Sabourin on a team that he truly deserves:

The ALL STAR team.

If that guy on the Canucks (even I heard about this one) almost landed on the team, surely ArmchairGM can see to it that Sabourin receives enough votes.

Finally a worthy cause to pursue (other than having Jay Mariotti fired).

VOTE SABOURIN.

I didn't say Brodeur was a minor leaguer. You really have to read what I'm typing. I said before you make a statement like that, you have to look at their surroundings. Brodeur has always had a good defense, whereas that has never been the Pens' forte. And no, I didn't breakdown Sabourin's percentages, I guess I don't have time for that. Fact is the Pens are counting on their offense to win games. It's a strategy I never fully accepted but it's been that way since last season. But, as evidenced, it will only get you so far. And in case you haven't checked recently, Brodeur hasn't exactly been at the top of his game either. What's worse? Having an average goalie like Sabourin or Fleury who still want to go out and give 100%, or a goalie like Brodeur who doesn't know when to quit while he's ahead?

Perhaps Brodeur PLAYED like a minor leaguer...but when you look at the stats of that game, it's obvious who the better goalie was.

I think it has become clear that MAF was not the problem, and that the Pens seriously need a right handed shot. I would also like to point out that the Pens missed Ryan Whitney a great deal. Orpik sucked on the PP. It seems to me that the Pens are still in the final stages of rebuilding. They still need to mature, so it is imperative that Fluery and Letang get playing time and playoff experience so they can make a serious cup run next year.

I agree. Whitney's return (hopefully it really WILL be tonight) is in dire need. Orpik has a pretty crappy presence on the blueline, he's just a big hitter. I actually wondered the other night on his assist to Hall's tap-in if he meant to shoot it that wide, or if it just went there on it's own. I know Sydor has been quiet, but I'd rather see him on the PP than Orpik.

In college football, if you lose one single regular season game, you are pretty much completely out of the national championship. How is that possibly not meaningful?

Meh, I guess not TB. But last season it got really intense in the last two weeks. And when your team finishes two points out of first or misses the playoffs by a point, suddenly that one overtime loss or regulation loss really means something.
