Penguins Recap - Devils 3 Penguins 2

by FrankD

What would a first period goal against the Penguins be like if it didn't come in the first five minutes?

Put it this way: the Penguins' last give games have been against the Flyers-Rangers-Flyers and Devils. All but the Rangers managed to get a goal in within the first five minutes, wit the Rangers doing it inside seven.

First period goals are killing the Penguins, and it seems like they don't even care. Never mind the fact the Pens have gone in to the second period in the last three games down by at least two goals (three for the Rangers). The play on ice reflects the same attitude for the division. Give up early, fight back later. Sometimes, you make it - more often, you fall short. That was the case tonight when the Pens rallied back from a 2-0 deficit to tie the game at two, only to lose on a third period goal with the final being 3-2.

I'm sure if you ask Crosby, streaks mean nothing unless it's a win streak. Sure, he's gone on to score in the past 17 games, but the team has also lost four in a row and dropped to 1-6 on the month.

Considering all of these division games, it hurts twice as much. Not until later in the season, much, much later in the season, will the Pens have another opportunity at picking up points in the Atlantic standings. Perhaps by then it will be too late, but even then it's too soon to say. Here are the last 11 games for the Pens, 10 of which land in the division.

Is it just me, or does the schedule seem a bit bizarre?

We play each division team eight times a year, yet in the last month we play the Flyers and Rangers three times each and the Devils and Islanders twice. On the bright side, at least Brodeur didn't get the win tonight. We can at least pretend something good came from this.

Earlier in the season the Devils had hinted Weekes would be seeing a substantial amount of ice time, but who'd have thought they'd bench Brodeur in the heat of his hunt for 500? Perhaps Penguins fans can take this as an insult. "Oh, the Pens aren't good enough, so we can start our backup and still walk away with a win." Although I highly doubt that was the train of thought, I wouldn't be surprised if someone at least mentioned it. And in front of the home crowd too...they're really putting their fans through the ringer.

User Steel Town recently stated in a comment, "I don't even know where the problems start anymore."

Valid point, but I'd love to hear your solutions.

Here is mine.

Kick Fleury back down or trade him up for a strong defenseman, preferably a right-handed shot on the blueline. Give the starting job to Sabourin and call up Ty Conklin from WBS. Send down Eaton and call up Letang for an additional balance on the blueline of both a powerplay threat and neutral zone trapper. Letang's only two NHL goals came on the powerplay in his seven game stint with the club last season. He'd be a great threat on the second PP line. Get Laraque, Roberts and Armstrong on that 4th line to send some energy and intimidation towards the other team. Scratch Kennedy, Nasreddine or Ruutu before you consider scratching Armstrong. He plays a more disciplined game then Ruutu, has a better shot than Nas (even if it IS only one goal on the season) and has more muscle than Kennedy.

Above all - HIT THEM. Laraque and Ruutu hit them tonight, although I wouldn't say Ruutu's hit was exactly hard, just well placed. But Laraque's was a different story.

If you needed a further reason why, look at the penalty kill's performance Saturday night against the Flyers. Three powerplay goals...

Kudos to the Devils, seriously. They played a very disciplined game, giving the Pens only three attempts on the powerplay. Considering the Penguins' performance Saturday against the Flyers, I'm surprised they converted once on so few chances. Pray tell loyal AGM readers and/or Penguins fans, how do you solve this stifling problem?

1) You aren't trading MAF. He is the future in net. Also, you can't be a team with serious aspirations if you have Dany Sabourin and Ty Conklin in net. If you want to send MAF down, you can have Sabourin or Conklin backup, but you need to make a trade for an established goaltender. Andrew Raycroft is a name I keep hearing.

2) Brodeur likely sat for the exact opposite reason you speculate. Sometimes teams just have a guys number. Even though Brodeur won one of them, he has given up 9 goals in two games against the Pens.

3) I feel bad for Sabourin who, with another victory, would have moved only 490 wins behing Martin Brodeur on the all-time win list. (that was was a special gift for a certain AGM user).

4) The Pens have 2 lines where opposing teams hold their breaths and then two lines where they breathe easy. They could use one or two more guys who can put the puck in the net so that every game doesn't depend on Crosby or Malkin, both of whom played very well yesterday.

5) The key to beating the Pens over the long haul is staying out of the penalty box. Their power play can be deadly.

1) Raycroft is NOT good, I don't know why people insist on getting him. Yes yes, I know, he got a shutout this season, but so did Sabourin. In the long-run, they don't call him Red Light Raycroft for nothin.

2) It was more a joke than anything else, just venting frustration...

3)I know that wasn't intended for me, so I'm letting it slide.

4)They could have more depth, AE: move Malkin and Crosby onto seperate lines, but that would take away from there already weak scoring. Might as well take what you can get now and hope the other lines can pick it up.

5)The powerplay CAN be deadly, but hasn't been yet. I think the real key for Pens victories is staying OUT of the box. Last night Orpik, Gonchar, Laraque and Roberts were playing tag in the penalty box.

I agree with MJD. You don't trade Fluery unless it's a sweethart deal that includes a solid vet. It's not like we are winning with Sabu so why not let MAF learn and improve. I have said before, this is still a rebuilding year. Stanley Cup aspirations are a bit out of reach. I think Shero needs to make a trade for one if not two Ulf or Kasparitis type defensmen sooner than later. Mr. Letang is sorely needed for our underachieving power play. I agree that the Pens should not scratch Army, he has grit and some goal scoring ability. I would like to see Laraque moved up to the 2nd or 3rd line. He needs someone on his line that can take a pass. He is excellent in the corners and needs a goal scorer to pass to. Perhaps the line you mentioned Frank, would be a good idea for a third line. But like I said earlier, I really don't know what the true problems are anymore, so coming up with answers is iffy at best.

I don't think this is still rebuilding. Right now your second line wings are a combined what, 80 years old? I think you are in that in between phase where you want to make some trades to try to get some veteran players, especially on defense and in net, but you aren't in position to make a big splash and trade away young talent. This is where it gets hard though. When you are awful and have a top 5 pick every year it is easy to find impact players. When you become a middle of the road team, it becomes tougher.

I don't know if rebuilding was the right word. The Pens have built the core of their team. It is now time to find those role players that need to fill the gaps and make a complete team. It is more like the final stages of a rebuild.

Steely, my point is; we're not winning with Fleury either. What could it hurt to toss Conklin in the net for two or three games? We did it with Letang last year on D, why not use the net as testing grounds too? I didn't call this a rebuilding year at first, because for the most part we have our staff. We only added Hall, Sykora and Sydor this year to an already formidable team.

I don't disagree with trying out Conklin. We also have a prospect in Alaska, he came to rookie camp this year. I am all for finding the best goalie. My point is, I would wrather loose with MAF than Sabu. MAF is learning and needs game experience where as Sabu is 4 years older and probably at the peak of his game at this point. The Pens have already taken enough playing time away from him and should really reconsider their system 'cause, if your gonna lose, you might as well learn from it.

Yeah I agree with that, but I just don't see how MAF is the savior of Pittsburgh's net. I know he won 40 games last year, but at this rate I'm hardly seeing 25. How can a goalie have such a drastic drop? But I also realize the Pens won games last year in the shootout style that was actually scoring. It wasn't hard to find a 5-4, 6-5, 4-3 sort of win. This month, in every loss, we've only mustered up two goals.

Look at the game yesterday. The only Pens that created scoring chances were Corsby and Malkin. You always have to find scoring somewhere else. What happened to guys like Talbot and Christensen chipping in some big goals?

It is the lack of Defense. With the Pens struggles on D the offense and goaltending both take a hit. That would be my number one priority if I was Shero, solidifying a lackluster D.

MJD - that's been our problem all season. Sid and Malkin are the only two doing anything. Talbot was never a really big goal scorer, he just had a bizarre jump out of the gate. Christensen was definitely more of a scorer, but hasn't had much going for him as of late. It hurts too, because the guy has a killer shot but chokes on a lot of open net chances. He should have at least three more goals on his tally this year. Christensen is the sort of guy who is amazing on the shootout though - if we can manage to get to a SO. I'd rather take the regulation win...
