Penguins Preview - Battle of PA Round III (12-11-07)

Tonight the Penguins look to make it five in a row with a win over the cross-state rival Philadelphia Flyers.  In the previous two meetings this season, the Flyers were victorious in both.

I'm not going to confirm it, but I wouldn't be surprised if Laraque or another heavyweight on the team threw down the gloves early with Jason Smith in retaliation to a slash on Sidney Crosby back on November 10.  If you don't recall, allow me to recap for you.

In the dying seconds of the third period, in what was more than likely a Penguins loss, Jason smith slashed across the mitts of Sid as he tried to maneuver in front of the Flyers' goal.  Although it may have appeared to be a dive (I personally think Crosby just sold it wrong), the slash was still evident.  The incident resulted in a Flyers and Pens scuffle against the boards, ending with a Ryan Malone 10-minute game misconduct.  Earlier in the match, Malone engaged in a fight that left him cut and bloody right between the eyes.

To make matters worse, Smith went back to the bench after the obvious slashing call and couldn't contain his happiness.  Cameras in the arena and on television caught Smith gleaming from ear to ear with a dirty grin that simply read, "Yeah, I did it.  But you didn't catch me."

Bringing back memories of Crosby's rookie season in 2005, Flyers fan began chanting "Craaaawwsbeeee" and "Dive, dive..."  You may recall the controversy surrounding Sid in 2005, whereby Flyers Head Coach Ken Hitchcock accused Sid of diving to draw penalties.  The Philly media jumped on the accusations as well, only adding more fuel to the already potent fire that is the Battle of PA.

So far this month the Flyers are 1-2, their most recent being a 2-1 loss to the Avalanche.  The Pens are 4-1 in November, with their most recent a 2-1 shootout win over Vancouver.

Finally a look at the Pens' injuries.  Both Marc-Andre Fleury and Max Talbot are expected to miss tonight's game with ankle sprains.  Fleury sustained the injury in a bad fall against Calgary last week.  Talbot, who missed four games due to a high ankle sprain, was seen limping off the ice after the Canucks match.  Both are listed day-to-day.

Round three of the Battle of PA starts tonight at 7p.m.

Unconfirmed and completely unsubstantiated reports from a source without any knowledge of the Pittsburgh Penguins claims that Fleury's ankle is really fine and that this was simply an excuse provided to the media to allow a peaceful transition of the starting goalie position over to NHL All-Star Dany Sabourin.

Last game Crosby got slashed at the end of the third. It was a cheap shot. I can't remember who did it, but I remember him laughing on the bench afterwards. Bad blood between these teams goes further back than this year, you know that.

Never fails, Flyers fans are always the ones to come out of nowhere when they actually win.

Come out of nowhere? Ok.....That's why we're one of the cities in the running for new Hockeytown, USA I guess. All I saw was a bunch of penguins fans sneak out of the place with their tale between their legs

Maybe in Philly Bberg. I have NEVER heard anyone call Philly "Hockeytown, USA". I have read some articles claiming St. Paul could be hockeytown, but the Wild said they are happy with "State of Hockey". It's hard to be called hockeytown whey hockey plays second fiddle to football. Besides, how are you "in the running"? Is there an election I should know about?

and on that note, Philly is first and foremost a football town...hockey is the #2 sport IMO...but for a couple of reasons...
  1. 1, when was the last time the flyers were bad...and by bad i mean in the dumper, no chance to get better, miss the playoffs for 5 straigh seasons...the early 90s..and that was only a few seasons...before that, they've had tragedy and more importantly...the bullies, which for good or bad, matched the town...tough and hard working...

the city loves that team and unlike a certain baseball team, the team lloves the city...

besides, the one thing hockey has going for it is a close connection. Hockey players are more accessable, less egotistical (on the whole, in the US) and make less money than other athletes in maor pro sports...

Hockey plays second fiddle in the Burgh too. Unlike the Flyers though, the Pens have had some bad stretches. But hey, at least that has given us some great draft picks. Mario, Jagr, and Crosby make hockey fun to watch, win or lose.

Oh and Berg, I meant that more on the fact I'd never seen the name Donnie before on any post anywhere on the site. Not necessarily Flyers fans as a whole. It's a quality of all Flyers fans to say something when they win, especially destroy another team. They've mysteriously silent when it's the other way around though.

Well the Pens made up for any imagined cheap shots to Cindy , I mean Sidney, from last game. The Pens were cheap as hell in 3rd period. The Flyers are under a microscope and if they they pulled some of the crap the Pens did last night there would be a suspension today. We admire Cindy's talent but hate his crying , whining , diving BS. He is a below mediocre defensive player too. Give me Ovechkin any day. Until Cindy man's up he will get booed in Philly. Of course we need to get someone like LaRoque. Nobody in the East can stand up to him.

By crap the Penguins pulled do you mean the elbow to the head of Laraque? Crosby gets booed everywhere because he is so good. Your Flyers tried to scare him with physical play since his rookie year with cheap shots. You see, it's not the fact that he can't take the heat, it's that the Flyers can't play within the rules and stop him at the same time. Stop taking cheap shots and he will stop whining.
