Penguins Lay Goose Egg

The Pens and Rangers squared off last night in Madison Square Garden looking to overtake third place in the Eastern Atlantic conference (from the Rangers). No such luck with Ryan Malone out with an infected cut on his leg and Maxime Talbot on IR. The Pens were held to just 18 shots on goal throughout 60 minutes while the Rangers were able to put away 4 of 31.

Some ex-Penguins showed up last night.....for the Rangers. Martin Straka Michal Rozsival and Jaromir Jagr combined for 6 points. Other notables include goals by Scott Gomez (2) and Chris Drury. This is the first time all season the Pens have been held scoreless. The loss puts them 4 points behind Eastern Atlantic leader the New Jersey Devils and 13 behind the division leaders Ottawa Senators.

Pens hope to improve to 17-15-2 when they head to Boston Thursday to play the Bruins. Malone is not expected to play due to injury. However, Pittsburgh recalled forward Jeff Taffe from Wilkes-Barre/Scranton and reassigned Connor James. Taffe leads WBS with 21 points in 27 games.

ps...sorry if this article sucked. I am taking over for FrankD until he returns from his trip to the Hockey Hall of Fame. Hurry back frankie! :)

Kelly, thanks for the update. I can tell you one thing. It was no picnic for the Penguins, I agree with that. The Rangers got back to basics when it came to their defensive gameplan in shutting down Sid the Kid and keeping your Penguins to the perimeter most of the night (only a couple of really big chances... a long shot from up top in the first period and that rush down the right wing side on the give and go to end up denied by King Henrik). But it goes without saying that Pittsburgh seemed to lack a sense of urgency during the first two periods. And you mentioned goose eggs, right? The Rangers have blanked three of their four division rivals at home to date at least once (2-0 over Philadelphia, 2-0 over New Jersey and now 4-0 over Pittsburgh). And they've had their share of issues of late, so we'll see how they fare tomorrow and Friday besides your Penguins in a tight division race.

Yeah the Pens were definitely lackluster...to say the least. They may have had 2 or 3 good shifts all game. I have faith still. Like you said the division is fairly tight! :)
