Pen-ding Future...

As the trade deadline looms all is quiet on most MLB fronts. The game of position each team masterfully plays is coming to an end. Tomorrow will mark the trade deadline, and for the first time in years there are not many names to be readily available. As with most; teams are looking for relievers to help give them that shot in the arm for September and October runs.

One team that didn't figure to need that proverbial shot in the arm was the Boston Red Sox. It seemed as if they had the perfect situation with either Mike Timilin or Manny Delcarmen working the seventh, and then Hideki Okijima working the Eight; right on to Jonathan Papelbon shutting it down in the ninth. They have an astounding ERA of 2.74, they have only gave up 88 runs, and have pitched a combined total of 289 innings (lowest in MLB). So why is Theo shopping for an arm you ask?

It is simple, in big situations and small as evident in the last two games the Red Sox are still not a shutdown team! It is evident that the Sox needed a stronger seventh inning presence before the August-October months. But at what price and for what talent. The Red Sox I am sure would not like to mortgage there future by sending a couple of good pitchers for an aging and hurting Eric Gange, Octavio Dotel, or even a Demarso Marte.

I don't think the answer is in another arm, I will try to elaborate. The bullpen is good and were looking for veteran power to hold down a situational seventh inning. So to me if the Brendan Donnely can get healthy he would make sense in filling that roll. He was arguably having a very good year with the Red Sox and he has just a 3.05 ERA in 27 games and has not given up a HR this year and 19 Hits. He is comparable to the three pitchers the Sox are looking at...

Octavio Dotel: Has played in 24 games has a 3.91 ERA and has given up 3 HR, and 24 Hits. Eric Gagne: Has played in 34 games has a 2.16 ERA and has given up 2 HR, and 23 Hits. Demarso Marte: Has played in 43 games has a 1.38 ERA and has given up 0 HR and 19 Hits.

Now Gagne wants to be a closer with closer money, it doesn't make sense unless you look to put Papelbon in the starting rotation. Demarso Marte is going to also come at a very steep price, and is unproven in BIG situations. The fact is if Donnely can get healthy the Red Sox can solve what is not a very huge problem by not trading away anyone and saving money.

I know it is great to have arms but the Red Sox do have them and they can deliver. The seventh inning may be a roller coaster once in a while but I know 29 other teams would love to have that problem. And don't forget they always have TIM WAKEFIELD as a bull pen option!

The Red Sox have today off so no more posts until then!

Sort of off topic but can someone please explain to me why Boston is in the Teixiera chase? This makes absolutely no sense to me.

Mike Lowell is in the final year of his deal...They would most likely deal lowell, move Youkilis to 3rd and hav Tex at first...each at his natural position (Youk is a 3b)

You don't need to do much at 1B except learn how to do a split. I could play 1B at a major league level.

I hope Boston grabs Gagne and moves Paps to starter. Then Gagne gets injured in the third week of April and the Sox are screwed for the '08 season. That'd be sweet. :-P

Everyone needs to stop talking about Papelbon as a starter. They don't need him to start, they need him to close. One blown save does not a bad closer make. It's only his second one all year.

NO HE WON'T. Why don't people understand this? He has one blown save and everyone goes bonkers. Just stop. They thought he would start, things didn't pan out that way, he's been an All-Star closer for 2 years in a row. If they need him in 2 years for a spot start, how in the hell do we expect him to start after being a closer for 2 years? Someone might say "Look at John Smoltz..." but Smoltz was an established starter before being a closer. It's much easier to go starter-closer than closer-starter.

We're not saying that Paps is a bad closer, we're just saying that he's going to move to starter because of what the Red Sox management wants. It has nothing to do with his job as a closer, it has everything to do with his potential to be a starter.

Its going to happen...just a matter of time...If you ever watch 'smear warm out, you'll notice that the longer he does, the better he performs...that's just another stitch in the starter reasoning...

its not that the guy is a bad closer...its just that boston wants him to start and so does he...he only does it out of necessity...

we laud players for "saying the right things" and Papelboner did just that...i'm just pointing out that he did

I would assume both, And I think it helps there pen has been good. And lets face it Okijima has been a god send! I trully think Oki could be the closer if paps had any problems! But Oki has to watch his innings too he has alot...51.2 IP for a guy new to the MLB is a ton!

If you're smart as a manager, your best pitcher is your closer...BUT, as long as Schilling, Becket, Lecester, Dice-K, and Wakefield are around, Papelbon will not be in the starting rotation

not so say he won't be after Schilling retires...the Sox have some solid young prospects that throw the ball real hard that they can try in that closer role...or just trade for Chris Ray (we'll take Kevin Youklis, thank you)...

Schilling is on the last year of his deal in boston...i doubt they resign him unless he comes cheap...which he won't...Wakefield is certainly aging, but he's a consistant inning eater and is there for the foreseeable future...Beckett is never a forgone conclusion to be healthy...and Dice-K is entertain "holy crap did i really throw that much!" territory...

Why do you want your best pitcher to be a closer? Closers pitch 70 IP a year, starters throw three times that. Your argument might have some validity if 'closers' were actually used in the most important situations (i.e., bring him in with bases loaded and one out in the seventh, instead of with a three-run lead in the ninth).

Maybe I’m just being a pessimist, but I don’t know how much confidence people should have in Okijima coming down the stretch. I know he has been beyond anyone’s expectations so far, but I question whether he can maintain his success in the final months. I think the Sox question how his arm will hold up in October. If he does falter, someone like Marte might be a perfect, price conscious option.

I think with Okijima you ride the lightning bolt as long as you can...Teams win championships when bullpens get hot. Look at the Angels with Roddy, Sox in 04' with Foulke, Yanks were the best when Rivera was dominant and hot...So if Oki and Paps can keep momentum going you will go as far as they do as a team.

And a response for Kwitt11...tell me the last time a team won the world series without a capable closer & good bullpen. Paps is the closer, it's his role, and suits his arm best. He loves it and I don't think he would trade it off now especially with his success. And although I hate to admit it his idol is Rivera and it is very obvious who he models himself after.

And if your wondering...here are a few good bullpens and closers... 2006--St. Louis, Jason Isringhausen 2005--White Sox, Dustin Hermanson/Bobby Jenks 2004--Red Sox, Keith Foulke 2003--Marlins, Braden Looper

2002--Angels, Fracisco Rodriguez/Troy Percival

I don't know what your definition of "capable closer" is, but the fact that Braden Looper meets your standard makes me think it isn't very strict. The Cards' pen last year wasn't all that great. More importantly, it's easier to put up good numbers in the bullpen; you can throw harder and people don't see all your pitches. Take any #3-4 starter in baseball right now, and I'd bet he would make a decent closer. Rivera makes a great closer because he has one devastating pitch (the cutter) and one good pitch (the fastball), which makes him great when he goes through the lineup once but wouldn't be as effective as a starter. Paplebon has the stuff to be a really good starter. I don't really know or care how he feels about it; all I'm saying is that he would help the Red Sox more as a starter. (Unless there are legitimate injury concerns if he's in the rotation; in that case, it's a whole different story.)

Papelbon finishes out games the Red Sox need to finish out...They have no one else that has the experience or anyone in the farm at this time that could fill the roll. A 3-4 on any team cannot fill that roll...if this was the case every team in baseball would do it, Ask Fausto Carmona about being a closer, or even a Curt Schiling. It takes someone with superior concentration and an ability to get warm and in the game quickly. If having a Papelbon in the starting 5 is more important than having him in the pen and a 3-4 could have closed then the Red Sox would have put Taverez or Wakefiled in the Closer role. I think everyone who follows the Red Sox knows that is completely ridiculous. Your thoughts are understandable, he was a good starter and he had the potential. But his arm will always be in question since they had no idea what casued him to have a dead arm injury. He pitched 60 innings last year and ended up on the shelf. I don't think he can take the wear and tear especailly since he could possibly get almost 60 innings in a month-half if he were a starter. Regardless of all our back and forth with Papelbon he is successful in what he does and anything but him in the Pen especially for this year would be a big mistake.
