Pedro Martinez, idiot or baseball genius?

Last Thursday, Pedro Martinez went "Wild Thang" on the Washington Nationals pegging three batters in six innings. It really got interesting when Martinez decided to plunk Washington National’s Jose Guillen for the second time, something Guillen wasn’t too happy about. Guillen began rushing the mound before being stopped by the umpire, thus creating a dug-out clearing "altercation". Now, most would believe after seeing this that Pedro is the biggest idiot to ever play baseball, but is he? How do we know if Pedro isn’t just planning all of this?

Pedro is the smartest player to ever play the game. What makes him so great is how he knows how to get a player out of their zone and into his. Take last week’s contest against the Nats for example. Every time a batter came up to the plate against Martinez they were shitting their pants. They were so scared that Pedro was going to attempt to brush them off, causing them to play Pedro’s game and not their own.

Dale Earnhardt owns the title "The Intimidator" but I think it’s time to pass it to Pedro.

And then tonight he dominates Guillen, getting the double play ball with the bases loaded. Pitching genius.

Pedro knows what he is doing. He is taking the inside of the plate away from batters who crowd the plate. Clemens did the same thing, and it worked through his 40s

I don't think anyone thought he was an idiot. I think that people think he's a brilliant jerk.

By the way, no need for the language. And it's laughable to try and pass a nickname from a deceased icon in one sport to an icon in a different sport. Try again.

I don't think Pedro had intent to hit anyone. I can't remember who it was that said after the Guillen incident that in his day batters knew had to get out of the way of pitches. Guillen crowded the plate and just stood there when Pedro threw an inside pitch. The story here isn't Pedro, its Guillen and his well known short temper.

I don't think he intends to hit people, and I don't think he's a jerk to try to reclaim the inside part of the plate. Its simple physics that a ball will not travel as far when hit by the small of a bat closest to a players body? Why would a pitcher not take advantage of this fact?

I didn't say he was a jerk for trying to claim the inside part of the plate. That's part of baseball. But, he does have a history of being a headhunter. I don't think that's what he was doing last night, but he does have a history of that. That's what makes him a jerk.

What do people think about cutting the ENTIRE post from someone else's blog, and posting it here? Sure, there's a link back, but since the whole post is here, what reason is there for someone to go to the original blog? It's just my $0.02, but if your using someone elses content, ESPECIALLY a blogger, as opposed to main stream media, I think you could try a little harder to send traffic to the original post.

I don't mean to be critical for no reason. ArmchairGM generates alot of original content too, and when someone poaches a story from here, it would be nice to have the moral high ground. <p> Heck, maybe I'm crazy, and people think this was cited well enough. I'd be interested to know what people think.

Pgtiger, chill out. The guy made a mistake. He had good intentions. It is important to protect original writings. No need to bite his head off.

Sal (The Barber) Maglie, Bob Gibson, Jim Lonborg, Don Drysdale were never afraid to go inside even if it meant hitting a batter. It was part of the game then as it is now. I believe Martinez is a great pitcher and still wish he was with the Sox whether a genius or not.
