Theres nothing worse than 1) Hearing someone else talk about their fantasy baseball team in a league you do not participate in, and 2) Viewing other people's music playlists. Since I tend to break rule #1 from time to time, let's go for #2. However, since this is a sports site, I figured I would try to link some of the lyrics to this baseball season (ala Peter Gammons). Hopefully, you'll check out these bands and discover some new cool music.
Sufjan Stevens - "For The Widows In Paradise; For The Fatherless In Ypsilanti"
If there's anything to say, if there's anything to do,
If there's any other way, I'll do anything for you.
Do you think this song was going through Aaron Rowand's head as he sprinted into the outfield after a flyball? No wait, the wall was going through his head. Aaron Rowand made a game-saving self-sacrificing catch last week in a victory over the Mets. Xavier Nady crush the ball to deep towards center that was destined to be a bases clearing triple. However, Rowand caught up to it and reached out to make the catch, hitting the wall nose first. He suffered a broken nose and went on the 15-day DL as a result. No doubt he completely won over Philly fans and his teammates in the process of breaking his face.
Band of Horses - "St. Augustine"
i know you tried
i know you're cursed
i know your best was still your worst
when hollywood was calling out your name
The Cubs
With the Red Sox and White Sox ending long World Series droughts the past two years, it seemed like the Cubs had something going for them. However, the Cubbies have had a dreadful first quarter of the season. The have gone 4-14 since winning their last series last month. However, injuries have definitely played a huge part in the poor opening months. Derrek Lee, the Cubs offensive star, who has been hurt most of the year with a broken wrist, will not return until late June. Mark Prior and Kerry Wood have yet to throw an inning of real baseball in 2006. Although both starters return shortly (Wood is scheduled to pitch Thursday, Prior possibly early June), will it be too late to turn things around? Hey, the Astros did it last year. Knowing the Cubs though, it seems unlikely.
Band of Horses - "Part One (Savannah)"
And sit out tonight in some strange place
If we have no friends here
Well i had a few to begin with
Barry Bonds on the road
As we are forced to watch every Barry Bonds at-bat, outfield catch, bathroom break etc, we also get the pleasure of seeing how the road fans treat the contraversial slugger. Its no secret that pretty much every fan outside of the Bay Area hated Bonds the last few years. However, as Bonds prepares to pass the Babe, coupled with all the recent damning evidence of steroid usage, the fans have been on top of their game. The Booing has been rampant everywhere. Fans in San Diego tossed a plastic syringe onto the field. Phillies fans displayed a huge sign proclaiming: "Ruth Did it on Hot Dogs and Beer". I can't wait until he makes the trip to NYC.
The Raconteurs - "Together"
I'm a adding something new to the mixture
so there's a different hugh to your picture
a different ending to this fairy tale
Cole Hamels made his major league debut last Friday for the Philadelphia Phillies. After tearing it up in the minors the last few seasons, the Phills called up the phenom to fill in the rotation for the Ryan Madson disaster. Hamels, facing the potent Cincinnati Reds offense, didn't allow a hit until the 5th inning, struck out 7 batters and walked 5. Although he didn't factor into the desicion, the Phillies have to be very optamistic about his future. Philadelphia could bolster the rest of their rotation if Hamels sticks around and continues to produce. Anytime Brett Myers or Hamels takes the mound, they have the potential to dominate. They can definitely give the Mets a run for their money in the NL East, and avoid those late season swoons should the offense struggle.
The Islands - "Humans"
I'm not just their leader
I'm also one of them
Jeter is having a tremendous offensive season so far, with an OPS of .980, and on pace for 21 HR, 126 RBI, 135 R, and 26 SB. Tuesday night's Yankees-Rangers game was a perfect example of Derek's value to the team. With Giambi, Sheffield, and Matsui out of the Yankees lineup due to injuries, Jeter stepped up his game (4-for-5 with a double, home run, three runs scored and four RBI) to pick up the slack. The Yanks came all the way back from a 9-0 deficit to finally win the game 14-13.
