Paul Goebel (Paul Gordon Goebel) was born on May 28, 1901 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. After going to high school at Grand Rapids (MI), Goebel attended the University of Michigan. Goebel made his professional debut in the NFL in 1923 with the Columbus Tigers. He played in the NFL for 3 years, playing for the Columbus Tigers the entire time. Goebel also played in the AFLG for 1 year, playing for the New York Yankees the entire time.

Most people believe that 1924 was Paul Goebel's best year, as he ran back a fumble for a touchdown.
