The 2005 season was a productive year of learning for quarterback Paul Cianciolo. He had the opportunity to work with and observe Michael Robinson, the Big Ten Silver Football recipient as the conference MVP. The redshirt sophomore has a promising future and will look to challenge Anthony Morelli for the starting assignment this year. He made good progress during spring drills and will look to use his talents, athleticism and leadership skills to push Morelli for playing time. A confident and physical presence under center, Cianciolo appeared in four games last season. Paul, and his older brother, Joe, are one of two sets of brothers on the squad, along with Jim and John Shaw. Cianciolo is one of the squad’s premier students, owning a 3.91 grade-point average entering the summer sessions, which included a 4.00 during the spring semester. He is a potential Academic All-America and Academic All-Big Ten candidate.
2005 Sophomore Season
Cianciolo made his collegiate debut against Cincinnati, and also saw action against Central Michigan, Minnesota and Illinois. He did not attempt any passes. He was on the field for 17 snaps, led by nine against the Illini.
2004 Freshman Season
Redshirt season. Cianciolo completed seven-of-17 passes for 81 yards in the 2005 Blue-White game.
High School
Cianciolo was a highly recruited quarterback for coaches John Bagwell and Steve LaPrad at Fort Dorchester HS, earning 2003 South Carolina AAAA State Offensive Player-of-the-Year recognition. During his senior season, Cianciolo passed for 3,108 yards and 30 touchdowns, with a 54.8 completion percentage and lofty 150.31 efficiency rating. The 2003 Low Country Offensive Back-of-the-Year also rushed for 450 yards and six touchdowns as a senior and during his career ran for 800 yards and 12 scores. A wide receiver his initial two seasons, Cianciolo made 35 career receptions for 500 yards and five touchdowns. The team’s punter as a senior, he earned all-region honors twice and was the team MVP in 2003. In addition to serving as team captain for the gridiron squad his last two years, he also was a two-time baseball captain and was captain of the basketball team as a senior. Cianciolo earned academic awards for having the highest grade-point average on the football, baseball and basketball teams twice during his high school career. He played in the Palmetto State North-South All-Star game.
