Pats All Folks: 2008 NFL Draft Preview

No game preview this week so I decided to look ahead to April for the NFL Draft. This must suck, a potential 19-0 team with a top 5 draft pick but thanks to the 49ers the Patriots have that pick and thanks to Roger Goodell plan on using the pick. Like buying a gift for the guy who has everything it's hard to fathom who the Pats could pick up, do they pick up a dynamic playmaker like Darren McFadden or do they get a Div I-AA nobody that will become the next big thing. You never know with the Pats but here's my likely guesses at potential picks along with reasons why and reasons why not.

Glenn Dorsey, DT, LSU Glenn Dorsey has dominated the line of scrimmage almost every game this year. The Patriots can't go wrong improving their defense their decrepit stop unit needs help starting up front. The Pats flaw this season has been that they been run over by RBs this season. This will definitely cease next season with Dorsey up front

Darren McFadden, RB, Arkansas The Patriots may decide to pick the best player available, which is easily Darren McFadden. If they're scoring 41 points per game right now, how sick are they going to be with McFadden and Laurence Maroney rotating at running back? With AP dominating the league with a ha-ha you should've picked me first, McFadden could go as early as number 1 but if he's available Belichick will snatch him just so a team in need won't get him.

DeSean Jackson, WR, California Highly unlikely seeing that they are STACKED at WR (does Kelley Washington even play). Another case of snatchies from the hoodied one and knowing BB he might let go of Moss after next season before he demands superstar money again. This is Randy Moss of the future can you really pass this up.

Derrick Harvey, DE/OLB, Florida Finally BB has his own "Dwight Freeney". Harvey collected 11 sacks in 2006, including two against Troy Smith in the last years BCS Championship. Harvey's regarded as a better prospect than Jarvis Moss, who went No. 17 in last year's draft. He's versatile and the Pats love versatility and Tedy Bruschi could very well call it a career at the end of the season and he's whom I'm hoping for. James Laurinaitis, MLB, Ohio State James Laurinaitis is arguably the best defensive player available. While he's more of a what you see is what you get player he will definately thrive in the Pats 3-4. Definitely the 2nd best choice if Harvey is taken, not exactly a Top 5 pick but the Patriots has the clout to take him number 1 and get no questions.

Chris Long, DE, Virginia Chris Long, son of former Raider and current FOX analyst Howie Long, currently plays in the 3-4 at Virginia. He's a top-10 prospect, so this seems like a perfect fit. Rumor has him being groomed by the Jets so if the Pats pick before the Jets why not take him and slap Mangini in the face

Saying DeSean Jackson is the next Randy Moss is a bold statement. He's got speed and some shakes, but he doesn't dominate the way Moss does.

I doubt that Glenn Dorsey will be available when the Pats pick (unless the Dolphins and Rams start going on a winning streak and the Niners continue to suck), but if he /is/ there, he would have to be the pick. The run defense is clearly the biggest weakness for the Pats (see: Joseph Addai, Jesse Chatman, Clinton Por... oh wait...), and Dorsey is a crazy run-stuffing machine.

The Rams might fix the O-Line and the Dolphins GMs...well you saw what happened last year I think Dorsey can slip to the Pats grasp too bad the Pats dont get to play San Fran

that's a fair point. Jake Long could very well go first overall to either Miami or St. Louis.

chatman worries me, although I think that they chose to let Addai run on them so Manning didn't beat them.

I think they go Wr if they have the option between mcFadden and Jackson. Stallworth and/or Moss will be gone after this year, and Chad Jackson has yet to play due to injury, so he'd be an important pickup.

LB is the way to go on defense. Although I think Tyler's right in that the best option will not be avalible for them. If they want to go defense, they'll trade down

You could also see the Pats trade down to the middle of the first round with someone who wants to jump up and grab a quarterback so that they can take someone like James Lautinaitis if he declares.

I was actually thinking this When i read the article...

But I think the reason for trading down is 2-fold...

1) because they can get similar talent at a less premium and/or more supply heavy position w/ a lower pick (and get additional picks...perhaps for 2009)

2) The person they draft will probably not need to or have a huge impact on 2009...and they could save a boat load of cash on him...drafting a top 5 guy costs a lot of money and impacts the cap heavily...

I can't see the Patriots drafting a defensive tackle in the early rounds. Wilfork is great at what he's supposed to do: eating up blockers. The reason the Pats have been run on with effectiveness has been the linebackers, not the D-linemen. In a 3-4, D-linemen aren't the run stoppers, they are supposed to stop the blockers, allowing linebackers to make plays.

The trio of Wilfork, Seymour, and Warren (with Green coming in at times) is about as good as it gets. We could use some more depth at DT in case Wilfork gets hurt, that's about it.

I think the Patriots will trade their 1st round pick.

I think they trade down to snatch a linebacker or grab Harvey who can play D-Line and LB

The reason the Pat's stats on the run haven't been better is because they've been playing the pass (putting pass personnel in) rather than the run. This has been because of the score disparity in all the games, and against Indy it was a choice of poison. All starting linemen have contracts expiring in 2008-09 so I could see the Pats picking lineman only to give the flexibility on those big salaries that will be commanded. The Pat's greatest need is ILB and RB.

The Patriots always surprise you, but I would be surprised if they did not take a LB or CB with their first pick.

no need more a minus here... I could see them taking a DB with their first pick...but it might be after a trade of the 49ers pick...

Each LB is over the age of 30 and they again run the risk of losing Asante Samuel. If one could ever say that a team that is thus far 9-0 had a "need" that need would be for a young LB or young CB.

I think that the NFL should have taken the Patriots earliest first round pick at the end of the year. Also what do they plan on doing with the Patriots pick in the first round, are they just going to skip it and have one less pick in the draft?

Richard Seymour, Vince Wilfork, Ty Warren and Jarvis Green on the bench say the Patriots won't take a Defensive lineman for their 3-4 in the top 5/10 picks of the first round.
