Patroits Soar Over Jets

Brady tosses number 150; Hobbs goes 108 in Pats win. The New England Patriots started this season off the way a Super Bowl contender should start the year off. Beating up on a much weaker team. The Patriots rolled over the Jets 38-14 on Sunday.

Tom Brady completed 22 of 28 passes for 297 yards and 3 touchdowns giving him 150 touchdowns passes for his career. Brady was able to do this because of the great offensive line, as he was only hurried once in the entire game. His new receivers also played a big role in his success as Randy Moss and Wes Welker both made great Patriot debuts. Moss caught 9 passes for 183 yards and one touchdown. Welker caught 6 of Brady’s passes for 61 yards and a touchdown.

Laurence Maroney was also a force as he ran the ball 20 times for 72 yards, and his backup Sammy Morris ran it 11 times for 54 yards, in his Patriot debut.

The Patriots opened the scoring with a 91-yard drive that ended with Tom Brady hitting wide-open Wes Welker, who scampered in for the early score. The quarter ended with Patriots on top 7-0. On the Patriots first drive of the second quarter, holder Matt Cassel dropped the snap on the field goal attempt and the Jets took over on their own 37. Chad Pennington and the rest of the Jets offense turned the drive into points when Pennington found wide out Laveraneus Coles open in the end zone. To end the half Tom Brady found Ben Watson in the back of the end zone and tossed it up to him, Watson made a nice catch and the Pats held a 14-7 lead as they headed to the locker-room.

To start the second half Ellis Hobbs received the kickoff 8 yards deep in his own end zone and took it out. After almost being brought down at his own 10, and having thousands of Patriot fans everywhere call him an idiot for not taking the touchback, Hobbs finished the return off by scampering into the Jets end zone for a 108 yard return, the longest in NFL history.

The Jets received a scare in the third quarter as Chad Pennington, who had a great game was dragged down for a sack by Jarvis Green and Pennington’s foot stayed planted as his body twisted the opposite way. He would leave, but later return before leaving for the last six minutes of the game.

On the next Patriot possession Tom Brady found a speeding Randy Moss cutting across the middle for a 51-yard touchdown. Pennington responded with a gutsy drive on his injured foot that ended in a Jets touchdown, their final score of the day.

Stephen Gostkowski capped off a 7 minute Patriot drive with a field goal early in the fourth and Heath Evens finished off the scoring as he leaped over the pile at the Jets goal line for a touchdown on the next Patriot possession.

Pennington finished the game 16 for 21 for 167 yards and 2 touchdowns; his status for next week against the Ravens is unknown. His replacement Clemens went 5 for 10 for just 35 yards.

The Patriots will host the Chargers next Sunday night; both teams started their season off with wins.

Don't get too excited, the Steelers romped the Browns by more points and no one is calling Pittsburgh Contenders.

I'd like to think the Jets are better than the Browns though. After this week I am not sure if the Jets are better than the University of Michigan.
