My fellow Armchairers:
I understand that websites and their parent companies need advertising revenue to run properly. But I just can't take it anymore. ESPN.com, while great in many ways, is now ONE GIANT ADVERTISEMENT. Today, for instance, if you type espn.com into your browser, all you get is a massive, full-page advertisement with a miniscule 'skip this advertisement' link at the very top. Is everything about money? Is there a point where enough is enough? Is it a website about providing information and opinions or scoring as much advertising money as possible?
I'm sure I'm overreacting, and there are many other popular websites that do this. To me, this ad-overload just reinforces to me why sites like ArmchairGM are the future of information dissemination. It's not always about money. It's about the love of something. It's about forging a community of those who share the same interests. It's about gathering those people who have something to say and deciding collectively whats right for the site, for the good of the site. That's what makes this sports website what it is.
Long live ArmchairGM.
