Pat's get their verdict

19

by BigPPup

Just in from ESPN, Roger Goodell and the NFL has made their ruling on Bill Belichick and the Patriots. The Pat's will face a total of $750,000 in fines. $500,000 of that will go directly to head coach Belichick. If the Pats make the playoffs they will also have to give up a first round draft pick.

I have refrained from commenting on "Cameragate" since the beginning, but this sentence just shows the ridiculousness of the situation. Changing the penalties based on how well we do this season, when we are caught in the first quarter of Week 1 in a game where we stomped the team anyway? You must be joking. Belichick and the Patriots organization should without question be fined. Perhaps they should be removed a draft pick. But come on. I expected better, Goodell.

I think the conditionality of the draft picks is because a late 1st round pick (if we make the playoffs) might be seen to be as valuable as an early 2nd and 3rd round pick (if we don't make the playoffs), so the value of the picks might be similar in the NFL's eyes.

So lets say in this week's game against the Chargers Tom Brady is sacked by Merriman, breaks his wrist and misses the season. As a result, the Pats go 3-13 and get the 1st overall pick. Are you still saying at that point that the Commish should have just chosen 1 penalty and stuck with it? Wouldn't losing a 2nd and 3rd rd pick in that situation be more "fair" to the Pats than losing the 1st overall pick?

Agreed, for the way the way that Goodell has attacked and cracked down on players for their mistakes, I expected him to hold a team and a coaching staff to an even higher level. The fines are good, but Belichek should be suspended for a game or two and the lost of draft picks should be manditory.

I got yah, but I really thought a suspension was more likely than the draft pick scenario. Regardless of what people think though, Goodell said there as going to be penalties for doing this when he became commissioner and the Patriots broke it in week 1. Not saying I agree with the ruling but the NFL isn't a democracy, it's a dictatorship.

All the dictator/democracy talk is rubbish. That is stuff for government politics, not businesses and organizations. It's Goodell's job to do what is in the best interest of the league, and in this case it is in the NFL's best interest to insure the competitive balance. If you must make political comparisons, at least be right. A democracy is when the people choose their representation. The players have their representation, as do the owners, and both groups approved Goodell as commissioner.

Actually, a republic is when people have representatives. A democracy is when the people have complete control over a government and vote on laws. I'd say the NFL is an imperial republic with a very rigid class structure, a strong central government which still depends on the support of the masses to survive. The NFL is imperial Rome.

I realize this little thread is pretty much dead now, but according to PTI, most players are in favor of a rather harsh penalty. Not just the Jets, or last year's Packers, or the Eagles from the Super Bowl. So if most of the players want a harsh penalty, how is that a dictatorship?

I think it's a good ruling by Goodell. And I don't care what you say, 500,000 is a hefty fine - even for a multi-millionare

A half a million is just a fraction of the $100 million fine received by those F1 dudes who cheated by "spying". I'm sure Alex H. will have a report on that matter asap.

I don't think a fine was the way to go. I think Bill will say that that amount of money is worth it and cheat again.

Goodell should've made Belichick volunteer to coach the Oakland Raiders. Now that would've been a punishment for the ages.

Just to let everyone know, the Patriots will probably fork over the $$$ for Belichick to pay his fine. Teams usually put up money for player fines and this probably won't different. Interesting question, though, where will this $750,000 go?

In my opinion, this is ridiculous. It's not like you're talking about a guy with a mediocre job paying 500 grand; it's a team! I like the idea about if they make the playoffs, but come on. 500 grand is nothing, especially with a team like the Patriots.

Yeah, it's weird that the coach (1 person) gets a $500,000 fine, and the team (which is worth over $1.1 billion according to Forbes) is fined $250,000. Do you think Mr. Kraft even bothers writing a check that small? He probably has a stamp for it, or some prefabricated checks or something.
