Pakistan Team for 2nd Test Match

5

Oh Lord! With the return of Younis Khan, who will star in Pakistani XI? Who goes out? In his last test match, Faisal Iqbal hit a series winning century against India which helped Pakistan clinch the series 1-0. Today, his solid defence coupled with elegant strokes played a role in drawing the match. He was playing in place of Younis Khan. This is my team for the next match

1.Shahid Afridi 2.Imran Farhat 3.Younis Khan 4.Yousaf Youhana 5.Inzamam Ul Haq 6.Faisal Iqbal 7.Kamran Akmal 8.Abdul Razzaq 9.Mohammad Sami 10.Umar Gul 11.Danish Kaneria

Or, Younis will come in and Iqbal will sit out. Will be a tough decision to have him sit out. Afridi or Akmal can be makeshift openers, but Pakistan is keen not to use Akmal's services in the opening department and Afridi has communicated his desire for playing lower down the order in test matches. Iqbal cant replace neither Afridi nor AbdulRazzaq, as they are our 4th and 5th bowler. Well, time will tell. Your comments on this?

You're dropping Salman Butt? I'd take him over Imran Farhat (he must have been so bullied at school...) any day. Kamran Akmal is some player. As for today, I think Strauss should have been more aggressive at the end of Day 4, and declare overnight, setting Pakistan 360 to win @ 4 or so an over. We lost about an hour of time we could have used to bowl Pakistan out on Day 5.

Thats true. Salman Butt should keep his place. But Imran Farhat ended up scoring more than him in both the innings, I am wary about Pakistani selection criteria.

With regards to Strauss, I know where he is coming from. Declaring on the eve of day 4 would have given the English bowlers an opportunity to bowl with the new ball twice, hence improving the chances of making a breakthrough. I think Strauss's plan was not to loose this test match and wait for Flintoff to get back in the team to take command. Negative cricket? Yes, but if Pakistan held on those catches on Day 1, England's chances would have been very weak to even hold on for a draw.

England's bowling hopefully should be boosted with Flintoff returning to the side, but Pakistan will be adding more mettle to their side by including their vice captain. The B-string Pakistani bowlers did well. Its the fielders, or shall I say I Farhat in particular, who let them down. Akmal did drop a sitter, but he does also makeup by performing consistently with the bat.

Something Geraint Jones doesn't do, he is picked to bat, and he is not as good as we first thought. As he is our best batting-keeper (as opposed to 'keeping-batsman), if his batting drops off, he has no value to us. Akmal is Number 2 in terms of wicketkeepers to Gilchrist, and we hoped G. Jones would be in that place.

Hows Chris Reed?

Chris Read is a good keeper, but poor batsman. His form in the County Championship has been dodgy, and he probably won't average more than 30. Which will drop to 20-25 in the Test Arena (it's about 10 at the moment). Jones averaged over 40 in First Class cricket, so the hope is that he can average about 30-35. The extra runs will make up for the dodgy 'keeping. There are a few options, Tim Ambrose is young and made a 100 the other day for Warwickshire. Prior has shown he is able for Sussex, but he averages about 25 - a bit more than Read. I think Alec Stewart retired to early. He revelled at Number 7 for England. He was perfect with the gloves, and averaged all but 40 with the bat, even when he was 40. He should have gone on another year or two I think - he could have got to last year's Ashes. Whether they still selected him or not is a different matter (on a cricket game I have, he is in my England team at the age of 43...)

Yeah, Alex Stewart was great with gloves and bat indeed. Matt Prior played well in ODIs in Pakistan. It depends how England wants its team combination. If they are confident of their openers and middle order then having a good wicket keeper but low average works for the team. But if the middle order or opening is weak, then a good batsman who can keep the wicket should be in the middle order. I have confidence in Flintoff, Trescothick, and Strauss. Pieterson always seems like the one who can easily score quick 40 but then most often looses his wicket.
