Black, 49, served as the Angels' pitching coach for seven seasons, including when they won the World Series in 2002. He was a big league pitcher for 15 seasons, helping the Kansas City Royals win the 1985 World Series.

I posted this bit of news simply to add the comment that I think Bud Black is a phenominal baseball guy and I think he'll do a fantastic job as a manager. I always hoped he'd get his first shot by coming back to Cleveland, but San Diego is a great situation for him. He deserves this opportunity more than just about every other managerial candidate out there and I wish him the best.

You're absolutely right. Black was a wonderful pitching coach. He will really turn the Padres into an N.L. West power. I can envision them becoming the West Coast Braves with several division titles. They already have two.

"helping the Kansas City Royals win the 1985 World Series" I didn't know Bud Black was an umpire in the '85 World Series!?!?

I'll always remember him as a Seattle Mariner or 50% less as a Toronto Blue Jay...
