Packers Win Ugly Thriller

The Green Bay Packers defeated the Denver Broncos 19-13 in overtime on Monday Night Football. The thrilling end to the game compensated for a very ugly display of professional football by both teams.

The game was marred by the 22 penalties for 166 yards. There was some justification for the numerous penalties as both teams played sloppy, however the over-officious jerks did call things a little too tightly in my opinion.

Brett Favre silenced his critics who questioned his arm strength by throwing touchdowns of 79 yards (46 yds in the air ) to James Jones and 82 yards (approx 40 yds in the air) to Greg Jennings. This is great news for the Packers as Favre hadn’t completed a pass of over 40 yards in the air since 2005. Future opponents will have to game plan for the potential big play from the Packers.

Observations

  • Favre finished 21/27 (13/14 in the second half) for 331yds and 2 TDs.
  • The game winning TD came off play action. This shows the benefit of the running game to help the passing game.
  • The Bronco secondary is in trouble. James Jones beat Champ Bailey for the first touchdown and Greg Jennings beat Dre Bly for the game winner.
  • DeShawn Wynn is not ready for the NFL. I’ve lost track of his injuries as yet again he had an early exit.
  • Ryan Grant finished with 22 carries for 104 yards. The first 100 yard rusher for the Pack in 10 regular season games.
  • Atari Bigby took some very stupid penalties and showed his immaturity.
  • The Packer defense continues to play sloppy but not give up many points.
  • The Packers are 8-3 (3-0 this season) on the road under Head Coach Mike McCarthy.

If the Broncos won the toss to start overtime, they probably would have won the game. The Packer defense spent most of the game winded after Green Bay’s first quarter time of possession of 2:56. Further wear and tear on the Packer defense is due to the 11-play 72-yd drive that resulted in the game tying field goal at the end of regulation. The Packers D may not have held up for another drive through the thin mountain air..

After the game, McCarthy announced that Ryan Grant will be the starting running back for the Packers next week against the Kansas City Chiefs.

Packer Injuries

  • Nick Collins-Ribs (played injured)
  • Deshawn Wynn-Shoulder (left the game)
  • Ryan Pickett-Knee (returned)

The Broncos made the Packers look silly at times with how bad they were tackling. It was some of the worst tackling I've seen by the Packers all season. They're lucky to come out with a win.

Two things really bothered me about the defensive performance:
  • How badly the Packers bit on play action.
  • How they would stop rushing the QB to prevent the pass to the checkdown.
Bob Sanders Vanilla approach to not give up the big play may hurt them later.

The Broncos did not loss the game on the Coin-toss. They lost by letting the receiver get deeper than the safety. Don't like losing on the first possession of OT, then play some damn defense! They only let the Packers score 13 points all game, and if you can't hold them one drive in OT then you deserve to lose! I hate when people cry about the NFL overtime rules.

"If the Broncos won the toss to start overtime, they probably would have won the game." From the article. I take any comment upon the OT coin toss as crying about the OT rules.

You need to adjust your perception before you go on talking about how you hate what someone says.

As you continue to read, you will see that the entire paragraph is about the tiredness of the Packer defense. They were exhausted. To quote the article: "The Packers D may not have held up for another drive through the thin mountain air."

I am speculating because, in my opinion, the Packer defense was too tired to withstand another Bronco drive. Hence the statement that if the Broncos won the toss, they probably would have won the game.

That was Wembley's fault. The pitch just cut up. The grass was too short, that's the problem with having a football stadium host a football game (if you catch my drift!).

Ryan Grant? I thought the Pack had three running backs and that none of them were named Ryan Grant. (Deshawn Wynn, Brandon Jackson, and Vernand Morency)

They have 4 Running Backs, all of which are pretty "sub-par". None are above 75 on the Madden scale.

They always have a love fest with at least one player during the game. A couple of weeks ago, it was Trent Edwards of the Bills. They kept calling him the next Jim Kelly, even though he only passed for 176 yards in the game. Even though the only reason the Bills were in the game was because of special teams and mistakes by the Cowboys offense, even though he accounted for exactly ZERO TDs, and even though he came away with a passer rating of 74.1 (he's 69.9 on the season, by the way).

They also compared Marshawn Lynch to Thurman Thomas, despite his averaging 3.3 yards per carry en route to a 66-yard performance. Oh, and he also accounted for ZERO TDs. They also have to find someone to obsess about. It's what they do.

I was very encouraged by the play of Ryan Grant. We desperately need somebody to carry the rock.

Excellent win on the road for the Pack. Brett's incredible. Bye bye Wynn. Grant looked great. Glad to hear McCarty named him the starter against K.C. It should help Brett in the passing game.
