Injury prone 7th round rookie running back DeShawn Wynn was placed on Injured Reserve by the Green Bay Packers Tuesday. The move comes in wake of a shoulder injury during the first part of Monday night’s victory over Denver. Pre-season pick-up Ryan Grant will assume the starting position with veteran Vernand Morency and 3rd round rookie Brandon Jackson backing him up.
Wynn had 203 yards and 4 touchdowns via 50 carries in the action he saw this season. He showed the most potential of the running backs who were present for the pre-season and training camp. However, he has repeatedly been nicked up throughout the year. In addition to the shoulder injury, Wynn has experienced issues such as a calf strain, a quad strain, a stomach virus, dehydration and a neck spasm. He played in all seven games for the Packers this season and started four of them.
Replacement Ryan Grant has played well in recent weeks. His one cut and run style is suited to the Denver style rushing attack the Packers are working to implement. He finishes his runs well and shows a tendency to hit the defender rather than try to avoid contact. If he has solved his fumble problems from earlier this season, his decisiveness should provide some consistency from the backfield.
People in and around the team liken Grant to former Packer Dorsey Levens.
The move of Wynn freed up a roster spot that Packers General Manager Ted Thompson immediately filled by activating wide receiver Koren Robinson. Robinson had been practicing with the team via a roster exemption granted by the NFL after he was reinstated from a one-year suspension.
Unfortunately, Robinson has experienced some soreness in his knee for about a week now. That will limit his practice time and probably impact his playing time.
Robinson served as a kick returner and a back-up receiver while playing in four games with the Packers last season.
