Packers Can't Afford to Cut Former First Round Picks

Less than 24 hours after his up-and-down performance in Monday night's 31-9 loss to Philadelphia, the Packers placed Carroll on waivers Tuesday. A 2004 first-round draft pick by Green Bay, Carroll never realized his potential, and the Packers had seen enough.

But why cut him? Isn't there a coach in Green Bay who could work with Carroll and try to get him on the right track? I know he's not lived up to expectations, but he played one bad half of football. In the first half, Carroll broke up three passes and registered his third career sack on Eagles quarterback Donovan McNabb. He actually looked like a good player.

But in the second half, wide receiver Greg Lewis burned him deep for a 45-yard touchdown that gave the Eagles a 17-9 lead in the third quarter. On the next series, Carroll was flagged for a 14-yard pass interference penalty. On the ensuing play, Lewis was left wide open for a 30-yard touchdown and a 24-9 Eagles lead.

In the fourth quarter, Reggie Brown beat Carroll deep for a 23-yard gain on a play that also saw Carroll get flagged for holding. That play led to the Eagles' final TD of the night, a 15-yard McNabb run.

Viewing the Packers' current state of affairs, I just think they could afford to hold on to Carroll and try to make it work.

I think it sends a message, and I wish more teams would cut lousy players. In fact, I think that's the one problem with the NFL - while the contracts aren't guaranteed, you still face a cap hit for cutting a player early. This makes no sense to me. You've already absorbed the financial loss for giving a bust a big bonus - why force the team to have the player as dead wood on the roster as well? I think this aspect of the salary cap rule needs to be changed.

I agree with this, but if he was a 1st rounder, someone had to see something. As for Carroll, he was a stud in college (Arkansas or Alabama?) and was drafted high. I think he could adjust to the pro game if given the right coaching.

Carroll wasn't cutting it. Plain and simple.

I agree. Sure, cutting a first round pick is an embarassment... but so is holding on to a guy tha can't play just to justify his pick.

Carroll's been masquerading as an NFL player since he got in the league... he's been absolutely horrendous in coverage since he got in the league. He wasn't cut based on one half, he was cut based on over 2 years of suckiness.

Then maybe the Pack has some poor scouting.

This just continues to prove that the draft is not a perfect predictor of talent. Many first-round draft picks go bust, and many of the best players were picked late in the draft (or in a few cases, not at all). While the first round has certainly produced a lot of good players, it's produced its share of busts as well. Every team ends up cutting first round picks every once in a while. The question is how often they do it, not if they do.
