Noah Herron, the Green Bay Packers third string running back sprained his knee against the Tennessee Titans Thursday in the final game of the pre-season. For those of you keeping score at home, this is the fourth Packer RB to get injured and miss playing time before the season even starts. The injury appears to be minor. Herron says he could have returned to the game but the Packer training staff kept him out as a precaution.
Vernand Morency, the number one back during the off-season has missed all of pre-season with an injured knee. He may be back for the opener, but his effectiveness will be unknown as he has missed all of camp.
Rookie Brandon Jackson suffered a concussion during practice earlier in the week so he sat out the Titan game. Jackson looks to be the starter even though he only managed 3.3 YPC in the pre-season. He appears to have gained confidence as the pre-season has progressed, but remains unimpressive. He has not shown any indication of breakaway speed nor the ability to make people miss.
In his first significant playing time since injuring his thigh approximately three weeks ago, rookie DeShawn Wynn saw the majority of the touches against the Titans. His 21 carries for 54 yards were less than stellar. In his defense, he was running with the Packers second team against the Titans starters. As the game went on, he became more effective. In the second quarter, he had a run on 3rd-and-8 that showed some indication as to why the Packers drafted him. The run combined both agility and power to achieve the first down.
Also injured in the game was backup safety Tyrone Culver. The severity of his injury in unknown.
Update: Herron placed on IR Sept. 2007
