Pac-10 to Leave the BCS?

Commissioner Tom Hansen says that if college football adopts the plus one model the Pac-10 will leave the BCS "no question." I'm hopeful that this is just posturing on Hansen's part but this is ludicrous for several reasons.

1. The Pac-10 is not the SEC. The Pac-10 is essentially USC and nine others. If this happens, I guarantee USC leaves the conference and becomes an independant and the Pac-10 dissolves as a conference not long after.

2. If this was the SEC the football powers that be might listen. The SEC is easily the best conference in college football, produces huge ratings and produces dozens of NFL players each year. The Pac-10 doesn't have the depth or talent that the SEC does. The Pac-10's talent is in their coaches who are innovative and creative offensively.

3. The Rose Bowl ceased to be "traditional" years ago. True, it's still played on New Year's Day but the game has involved a Pac-10 and Big-10 school three times since 2001. It's time to progress and buy into what the whole world wants to see.

The Pac-10 has tried to remain as traditional as possible. They have balked at adding members and splitting into a North and South. They don't play a conference championship game. They now play each team in football, something that no other big time conference does. In basketball they still play each team twice, once at home and once on the road for a total of 18 conference games. They also still play on the tradtional nights of Thursday and Saturdays with only a few exceptions. You rarely (if ever) see a Pac-10 team playing on Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday nights.

As a fan of the more traditional approach, I understand what the Pac-10 is thinking. However I think Hansen's stance is misguided and wrong. The Plus 1 model is actually a worthwhile investment for college football. It gives us a small playoff without getting into the logistics of an eight or 16 team playoff.

The Pac-10 would be wise not to bite the hand that feeds it, and continue to feast off USC in football and UCLA in basketball...as sad as it is to admit.

I don't think the Pac-10 is necessarily an inferior football conference, but if you're East of the Rockies, you never hear about it -- unless there's a gaff on an onside kick or something.

The lack of TV exposure to the rest of the free world is why the Pac-10 seems to get the shaft. Could a kid from Cajun Country, Mississippi go to Oregon State and compete. Well, it's a long ways away, but it's not a bad spot to be in, but the exposure in the SEC/ACC/Big 12 Market is minimal. HS football's good on the West Coast, primarily in California, but how many schools can those three-four West Coast state farm kids out to, when there's other "preppy" sports that are also taking the male student body?

I loathe the BCS, but the Pac-10's problem, at least on the gridiron, is the perception that the WAC and Mountain West are better football conferences, or at least on par -- that's the East Coast thinking of the casual fan.

Hardcore fans know it's not the case ... at least, not all the time.

The Pac Ten's number one problem is that they are way too loyal to Fox Sports West. They play a bunch of games at 10 P.M. EST on FSN. It isn't televised on the east coast and many of their games are too late for the East coasters. They need to be like the SEC. Play the game of the week on their own National television like FOX/ABC and then get their b list games on ESPN.

In keeping with their traditional approach, they have balked at letting TV dictate when their games are played. They play at 12:30 on Saturday primarily and occasionaly at 5:00 for an ABC game of the week. They don't like to let the TV bigshots dictate when their games are played. As I said, I can get with that...to a point. At some point, you're really hurting the conference when you stand pat too long.

Why? The conference is solid, it is certainly better than the ACC, Big XII, and the Big East. So why isn't it appealing. I know Stanford and the Washingtons stink, but the conference is improving. Cal, Arizona, Oregon State, Arizona State, and UCLA, are all potential Top 20 teams with some exciting players. I would rather watch DeSean Jackson and UCLA's defense over Pam Ward calling the Iowa-Indiana game.

Not quite sure what you mean when you're asking why it isn't appealing. I think the Pac-10 is appealing football. Innovative and creative offensively with good quarterbacks and skill position players who are infinitely more fun (to me) than watching an O-line block so a tailback can get three yards every play. I'm just saying that the Pac-10 tries to hold to their traditions and it hurts the conference.

But would you rather see that weak UCLA team over Michigan, Michigan State, Wisconsin, Iowa and Penn State All of those are perenial top 25 teams (throw in Minnesota and Purdue occasionally)

I don't enjoy watching Big-10 football...for the most part. It's boring (again, to me) and they don't add anything new to the game. At least Cal, Oregon and USC add new looks offensively. But I don't enjoy watching any mediocre team, regardless of conference. But even a top-10 Wisconsin team is boring to me because it's three yards and then a huddle. Again, all my opinion.

I like the idea of the plus 1. It's better than no playoffs at all.

I agree, plus 1 isn't perfect, but nothing they do will be.

A step in the rigth direction...+1 kinda lets people see what "playoffs" are like...plus its closer to finding the "true" Nat'l champ then the current format...

A Plus 1 is better than a Plus O, which is what we have now.

Plus 1 is the best way to go. I don't want an eight or 16 team playoff. A final four is the best solution.

I disagree, I think an eight team playoff is the better solution than a final four. However, like I said, I don't think their is a "best solution", because you will always have to leave some teams out.

Anything involving the West Coast gets shafted.

Argument 3 is lame. 5 times since 2001 would be 5 times in the last 6 seasons which means it's basically never deviated. The the West coast gets the shaft, the Mountain region gets whatever is worse than the shaft. Both coasts ignore the middle.

Only three times has it actually involved a Big-10 v. Pac-10 matchup. So it's about 50% traditional.

The BSC or whatever the eastern idiots who started it call it is lame period.....The National College Football Championship isn't a NCAA Championship. To really have a NCAA Championship like the other sports you will have to get rid of all the conferences and divide the schools into sections. Like East, West, North, South, MidWest etc...just like basketball and then only play 8 or 9 games to decide who goes to the championship games. 64 teams than 32 to 16 to 8 to 4 to championship game. It looks easly but too much money would be lost to the schools and conferences. Millions of dollars gone from programs that only have football as a money maker that supports the rest of the sports programs in each university. Than another question is who decides who goes to the 64 team tournment. Politics at it's highest. Is this team better than this team so on and so forth. Never ending problems with this idea. But the Pac 10 leaving the BSC is a good idea because the BSC doesn't and will not work in all cases. Plus way to many bias's with east and southern sections not seeing all the teams in the country. I am not a USC fan, mainly because I graduated from the better school on the other side of town UCLA, but their football program over the last couple of years has been extremely strong and has deserved the bulk of the credit for the high rating. I have seen most all of the other programs around the US and day in and day out I would say that Pac 10 programs are overall better but not by a lot. Yes, the WEST COAST GETS SHAFTED all the time in all the programs from football to baseball, but I still find it very interesting that UCLA is the first university to get to 100 NCAA Championship in only 57 years. Please anybody show me an eastern or southern school that is even close to that number. Yes please remember Football national championships don't count in this because they are not a NCAA championship.
