Ozzie Fined

14
Vote

According to ESPN, Ozzie Guillen was fined an undisclosed amount of money and ordered to take sensitivity training by Major League Baseball.

Commissioner Bud Selig said in a statement that "Baseball is a social institution with responsibility to set appropriate tone and example. Conduct or language that reflects otherwise will not be tolerated. The use of slurs embarrasses the individual, the club and the game."

Sensitivity training. Yeah, that'll solve the problem. Another spineless Selig solution.

I agree. This isn't nearly enough. I think Mariotti's suggestion of a two-week suspension was excessive, but he did need to be suspended. My dad said that this was consistent with what they've done in the past, but how long has it been since we saw a coach like this? When was the last time a coach said that a player should be shot for exposing cheating in the game? As I said on another article, it would be one thing if this was a first-time offense. But, the guy is constantly offending. His language is constantly inappropriate. The league needs to show him that it's not tolerable, even if you did just win a World Series.

Yes exactly. And as I noted before, just because this has been the punishment in the past doesn't mean it should be now - hopefully we learnb from our past mistakes and improve on them, rather than continue to repeat them endlessly. Hey ASwaff, we agree! Yeay! :-)

That would be learn. And, I think the two-week suspension is about right, given that this wasn't the first incident.

Exactly. Selig is just dropping the ball on everything right now. He's so consumed with mishandling the steroids issue that he's mishandling everything else. Between this now, and the fact that it took them almost a month to make Michael Barrett serve his suspension for punching a guy in the face, it seems baseball can't do anything right at the moment. Selig has done some good things for the game that I respect, but overall, his tenure as Commissioner has been disastrous. It's time for him to come to grips with that, do everyone a break and retire already. And this time, put in a commissioner that hasn't been an owner!

Just a thought: Has Ozzie Guillen become the Bob Knight of MLB?

The only reason Selig did this was because of fan outrage. This fine should have been levied within hours of his comments...if for no other reason that to show that major league baseball does not condone that behavior.

BTW, how good a reality show would Ozzie at sensitivity training make? I mean, seriously. Think about that one for a while.

And yet, Terry Francona did the same thing and he's not an asshole. Why is that? Oh wait, it's because of Ozzie. I forgot.

After seeing more clips of his interview about his mandated sensitivity training, I am even more angry about this laughably lame thing they're calling a punishment. The way Guillen snubbed his nose at Mariotti and said he would not apologize, and that Mariotti would always be on the hook for what he said was another example of his idiotic macho attitude. I thought it was idiotic, but forgivable. What was not forgivable was the way he snubbed his nose at EVERYONE ELSE by saying he would take the class, but he's not going to change. I hope Selig sees that clip and realizes that this course of action he's decided to take is nowhere near sufficient to deal with his vulgarity and ego.

The league had to move on this because the team refused to - that is pathetic.

I agree. That's been my point all along, and someone disagreed with me but didn't say why. This should have been a White Sox problem, not an MLB problem. Selig shouldn't have had to handle this, but he did have to, because all the White Sox front office did was have Guillen in for a friendly talking-to. You're right - pathetic is the only word for the way the Sox handled this. I don't know who to be more angry at - them or Selig.

They didn't say why, ASwaff, because the people who think Ozzie shouldn't be punished have no logic on their side, just like the guy who said the same thing over and over in the Comments section of my article without responding to the criticism.
