Ortiz First in Philly?

by user Xinoph

Boston Red Sox Designated Hitter David Ortiz will, as usual for Boston in interleague play, be breaking out his glove for the weekend series in Philadelphia. In previous years he has performed adequately at first base for the Red Sox; last year saw him get just two errors, but a low fielding percentage at .976%.

Normally this move would be without question for a guy who has 190 career HRs and 661 career RBIs. But this year the Red Sox have a viable alternative in steady first basemen Kevin Youkilis, who has proven adept on the offensive side as well. With the injury to Coco Crisp he has unexpectedly become the replacement for Johnny Damon as Boston's leadoff hitter, and he's filling that role admirably. On the season he has a .309 average, a .424 on-base percentage, 11 doubles, 3 homers, and 20 RBI.

So, Youkilis is doing well. But how does he compare to Boston's slugger, to whom he had to give up a ballot spot for the All-Star Game? Well, Ortiz has had his struggles at the plate this year. While he has 13HRs and 35 RBIs - surely numbers one doesn't want to give up in interleague play - his average is sitting at just .268, and his OBP is .364, both well below Youkilis.

If Ortiz struggles defensively this weekend in Philadelphia, and/or doesn't contribute offensively, Sox manager Terry Francona should seriously consider moving Youkilis back into the lineup. He'll definitely have a controversy on his hands, whatever he decides. While we usually talk about a quarterback controversy in football, this week in Boston baseball we could have a first base controversy. It will be interesting to see how this plays out.

Does anyone else think big papi will have a quick physical breakdown? Maybe not this year or next, but he is a huge guy and I can't imagine he is really in great shape. This will catch up with him.

I think Papi is a great player. Cecil Fielder was a big guy who didn't devolve too quickly.

I dunno, Xinoph....I think a lot of people think that. He's not exactly in the best of shape and the reason they keep him at DH in the first place is so that he doesn't break down as quick. Like Pat said, it probably won't be this year or next, but I don't think the guy is going to keep this up for a very long time.

If I were making the lineups I'd probably just give Ortiz, Youkilis, and Lowell each a day off. When Lowell gets the day off, just slide Youk over to third.

Pean - Mo Vaughn had 6 good seasons. I would not say that qualifies as long term success.

I think he'll be fine. he get's a lot of exercise joggin around the basepaths after he hits all those homeruns. A handful of games at first is not going to kill him.

The Red Sox should start with Ortiz. If the Red Sox are winning, switch to Youkilis. The other option would be to give Ortiz one at-bat during a double-switch. This way Youkilis can play at first and lead off. If Ortiz plays, then the Red Sox need to rejig their batting line up again.

If ortiz was a true mvp caliber player, sitting him would never be considered.

That's a silly comment, anonymous. Benching any player is worth considering in some situations. No player is always worth having, no matter how good they are. And the idea that one person bringing up Ortiz not playing makes him magically not worthy of the MVP award? Well that's just insane.
