Orioles Fire Sam Perlozzo
Sam Perlozzo is no longer the manager of the Baltimore Orioles after they posted a 29-40 record during Perlozzo's tenure this season. The team is in the midst of an 8 game losing streak and have fell into last place 15 1/2 games behind the front running Red Sox in the AL East. Only the Rangers are further out of last place with a 17 1/2 game deficit in the AL West. The team has 50 home runs last in the American League and next to last in majors with only Dodgers and Nationals having less home runs.
No player on the team has more than ten home runs with only four players having more than four home runs. Aubrey Huff who hit 21 home runs last season only has 4 with the Orioles only having 12 games remaining in the first half. Orioles have scored 298 runs with the White Sox the only team with less with 254.
No starter has more than 5 wins and Daniel Cabrera one of the five game winners has a 5.20 ERA. Jeremy Guthrie with a 3-1 record and 2.57 ERA and Brian Burres 3-2 and 2.94 ERA are two starters seem to be on the verge of having a good season. Erik Bedard 4-4 and 3.64 ERA leads the majors in strikeouts with 112. Steve Trachsel 5-4 and 3.94 ERA has pitched better than expected considering he was one of the last free agents signed despite winning 16 games with Mets last year.
Miguel Tejada with 7 homers and 37 runs batted in will be lucky to hit 20 homers and drive in 90 runs. He is slugging only .415 not much for a player that only three years ago had 34 home runs and 150 runs batted in.
The only question that remains now is what will it take for Peter Angelos to sell the team to an owner who doesn't try to micromanage the team. Orioles fans are tiring of Angelos and his failure to put together a winning team. The last time the Orioles had a winning record was when Davey Johnson managed the team in 1996 and 1997. So the next move is up to Angelos..either prolong the agony of Orioles fans or selling and giving their fans hope of better days in the future.
