Oops they did it Again!

Hooray! Another Bengal arrested(locked up...won't let me out..)! Also another WVU alum! Man, these 2 schools are popping out criminals faster than Paris Hilton popped her cherry.

Ok so that sucked but I couldn't think of anything. My main reason for this is...why? Why do players, even if they are not high profile, such is the case of recently arrested Quincy Wilso of CIN and Mike Mason of CLE, continue to fuck up? Aren't you supposed to learn from your mistakes? Or is it just me? It's not even just football, we know all about the steroids and other illegal drugs being used in baseball. How about Basketball and all the domestic violence charges (Ron Artest had entered the building, hide your wives!) or assault charges?

You would think, hockey, even now as less violent as it is, would have a bad rap with it's players off the ice. I personally have trouble finding one hockey player who has had off ice problems. Why? It's all just very odd indeed.

If I'm getting paid $400,000 a year, my ass is staying out of trouble, concentrating on my game to get an evne bigger payoff. Set an example, gangs are nothing but trouble, stay away from night clubs, and didn't they mention something about drinking and driving in school? I think Chris Henry was a bit tipsy for that assembly.

Are there any more black athletes you would like to bash? Yes, these guys have all made mistakes. Yes, these mistakes are stupid. And yes, most of these guys grew up in in single parent families from neighborhood environments that you will never understand but seem have no problem to relish and mock these legal situations. How much money these guys make now as professional athletes is not a factor for the off-field behavior. The NFL and NFLPA should be providing a mentoring program to help these kids adapt and understand their positions as role models BEFORE trouble ensues. And also keep in mind how much more profiled the NFL is compared to a sport such as the NHL.

Maurice Clarrett might not be sitting a jail cell right now if someone actually gave a shit about him as a person rather than a football player. And your attitude on this subject is beyond ignorant.

I will never understand? OH I SEE! So because they grew up with only one parent they have an excuse to be legal problems right? Oddly enough, alot of my friends (quite a feew blacks ones too since you're as bad as Stephan A Smith with race, bringing it up for no reason hush, go to a Black panther party), andf only 2, yes TWO have had legal problems, they don't balme it on their upbringing, it's their own stupidity. There's no excuse for stupidity. These guys bring it on themselves. And yes, EVERYONE ELSE (NFL and NFLPA rofl) should work to HELP THESE GUYS better themselves? Are you kiddding? They need to learn on their own. Not be weaned like that. If they don't have the common sense to know what's right and wrong, they probably shouldn't be in the NFL.

Upbringing obviously has something to do with it but speaking as a person who did grow up in a single parent home, i beg to differ. Socio-economic status has a lot to do with it...

and Stephen A. happens to be a good writer and is typically not one to call out/on the black athlete (He's a terrific writer and a terrible ESPN personality)...

Are these guys dumb...yeah...but...to think that hockey has less trouble in it than other sports is false....tyrone is right, its just lower profile

TehLoki is a jackass and this is not his first African American bashing post. This guy knows EXACTLY what he is doing with these posts. Seriously, what purpose other than to announce his absolute thrill over these legal situations does this post contain? The NFL is generalized as a bunch of out of control gang banging black athletes. The NBA is generalized as a bunch of wife beating black athletes. Real fair and balanced there. And then the NHL is implied as being the perfect (yeah - I will say it WHITE) sport. Bullshit. And what does Stephen A. Smith have to do with any of this, other than being a BLACK sports writer?

Clearly all these NHL related incidents are minor (child molestation, conspiracy to murder, illegal gambling) and PALE in comparison to the DARKER atrocities of the NBA and NFL.

I'm gonna stop you right there tyrone...

IMO, these things aren't race specific (and you proved my point)...both of you are wrong for making this a race issue.

However, if you look at the deeper problem, you'll note that socio-ecominic status has a lot to do with it. With that said, and I'm sure you'll agree, inner city, typically black people tend to be who have a lower socio-economic status...this is fact...for better or for worse...but in hockey this paradigm is more representative of poor white people who live in similar conditions in more northern cities (canadians and scandanavians namely) but have the same socio-economic status and educational parallels. The change in status (they have a lot more money and a higher profile) is there regardless of race and the results are similar.

There's an absolutely mammoth amount of imformation and discussion for this topic, but its unfair to suggest its wholly race related (disregarding the fact that race and socio-economics have a lot in common due to history).

Ju, you are being fair and balanced with your comments and I have no problem of course with that. But really, what was the point of this entire post? This guy has a history for this type of garbage. Of course ENVIRONMENT has everything to do with the upbringing of not just athletes - but all people. My point was that in a sport predominantly of white athletes such as the NHL, there are illegal activities no different than other sports such as the NBA or NFL. For this inciting author to pretend that the NHL has no such problems is simply a false pretense that the other leagues have greater problems. And I take offense to that theme along with the continued bigot attitude of this poster. Ask yourself what would happen here at ArmchairGM if I wrote a post depicting the NHL has a league of thugs and the NFL & NBA as model citizens? How can this author even write a column on this subject without even reviewing the off ice behavior of the NHL's participants? This is bullshit.

Of course everyone needs to be responsible for their own actions. Absolutely. But a better understanding to why these events occur in the first place needs to be discussed, not just celebrating "halleluyah, another black guy is locked up" attitude.

These kids are treated as tradable commodities right from day one. They are told by their college recruiters that "they will be taken care of" on and off the field. Bullshit. When they are drafted by the NFL, same type of garbage. And then when these kids get in trouble, they stand alone to be vilified (such as this blog post). That is NOT right. Again - I am not CONDONING the behavior (yes, it is WRONG) but kicking them to the curb is NOT going to fix the problem.

I am a little bit confused with where you got the idea that this post was meant with racist intentions. I think it is probably just a coincidince. Even if these statements were inadvertenly racist by naming dominantly black players they are also the cases that were given the most media attention. Therefore if you are to call anybody a racist it should be aimed at the media and not the topic creator. Maybe if the media were to give more attention to Brett Myers beating his wife instead of just heaping all of the blame on Ron Artest. Or Eric Steinbach, Barrett Robbins and their problems or all of the NHLs problems. But I feel the only person who did any harm in this topic are the players(regardless of race) and the media for perpetuating black athlets to be worse criminals than white athletes
