Only the Cubs...

Eight Years is a lot
Eight Years is a lot

I must both applaud and deride the Cubs' apparent signing of Alfonso Soriano to an 8-year $136 million contract.

I have to applaud the Tribune Company's desire to be a contender in the NL. Perhaps they saw how a weak Cardinals team was able to win the World Series and were inspired to go for a title now, rather than rebuild. With the signings of Pinella, Soriano, Ramirez, Wood, Miller, Blanco, and DeRosa, the Cubs have already spent $242.5 million. I'm not going to debate whether or not the Cubs' moves are going to pay off, because frankly, (my dear) I don't give a damn.

BUT I will note that the contract the Cubs gave Soriano is absolutely ridiculous. 8 years! Only the Flubs would give Soriano an eight year contract, well maybe the Yankees would too. Soriano will be nearly 39 years old by the time his contract ends. Soriano's skills will definitely diminsh withing 5 years, if not earlier, so the Cubs will be stuck with an albatross of a contract. Soriano's deal is the fifth biggest in baseball history, only trailing A-Rod($252 mil-10 years), Jeter ($189 mil - 10 years), Manny ($160 mil - 10 years), and Helton ($141.5 -11 years). I think it's unbelieveable that Soriano got more money than Beltran did.

The interesting thing will be to see how this deal plays out over the next 8 years, and to see what this will do to the contract negotiations to such players as Carlos Lee.

Soriano is a good player, but he had a great contract season. Washington wanted him back but he was fishing for that big deal. Im mad that Washington wasnt able to ship him out and at least get something for him. But the Cubs got more than they asked for paying him 136 mil thats just overkill

About 3 years and $5-7 MM/yr too much. Nicely done, Chicago!

Unless Soriano can pitch effectively without visiting the DL two or three times a year, I don't see this signing making much of an impact on the Cubbies.

I can understand the annual salary, I just can't believe the 8-year contract. That's a LOT of money for the Cubs to lock into a player that is so horrendous on defense and so prone to strikeouts. I think this was a big mistake on their part.

I don't know if this has anything to do with it, it's probably just pure specualtion on my part, but perhaps the Cubs were desperate to make a big splash to draw back some of the attention to the North Side. With the Sox World Series win and their fast start this year, the Sox actually had higher TV and radio ratings than the Cubs. It's conceivable that besides looking to put a winning product on the field they also had the incentive to draw back some of the fans to their side.

If they win a WS, it will be worth it. And maybe in the later years of the contract, as his power slowly detiorates, he will become a more patient hitter. But something tells me in the final 3 years, this is going to be a painful contract to deal with.

I agree Jeeves, too much money for a player like that. I sure am glad the Yankees didn't get him, AGAIN!! Pitching, pitching, pitching that's what wins in the playoffs.

I actually heard today the Tribune Company's looking to sell the Cubs. No clue how that affects the Soriano signing or anything else, but that's what I heard.

What they really need to compete is pitching. Perhaps they should have spent that money on established winning pitchers...

.275 is not the best average. He striked out an awful lot AND he is nowhere near a gold glover. Beltran got $$$ because he was a 5 tool player.

And he had a hell of a postseason in his last year with the Astros.

I'm surprised the Cubs didn't make a play for Zito if they were willing to splash around so much money. Zito may not be the best pitcher in the bigs, but he's pretty damn good and would do even better in the NL.

Then again, that may be expecting too much from the Cubs. Thankfully KW has the right idea with the Sox, stocking up on pitching

I don't know that the specifics of the contract have been released yet. Does anybody know if the last couple years are option years or that there's a clause like Aramis Ramirez had that allows him to opt out after X years? The contract sounds outrageous on its face, but once the specifics come out, I think it might be more palatable than a lot of people think.
